Manneke Pis pist het lont uit Lang geleden toen Brussel weer eens belegerd werd, boden de inwoners van de stad zo’n heftige weerstand, dat de belegeraars uiteindelijk moesten afdruipen. De Brusselaars richtten meteen een groots vuur op, maar ze wisten niet dat de belegeraars uit woede besloten hadden de stad in brand te steken. Daartoe hadden ze, ergens bij een poort, de lont aangestoken die naar een groot kruitvat liep. Gelukkig had een jongetje het gevaar bemerkt en het blusmiddel te voorschijn gehaald, dat hij onmiddellijk bij de hand had. Dat zo’n heldendaad gestandbeeld moest worden lag voor de hand.
