Well, well, Seth finally decided to give us some info about Tongeren. Thanks a lot man!! No one can figure out the purpose of this strange object. I know!! It's a kitty toy. You know, a little ball with some treats inside and when the kitty play with it, the treats fall out and kitty can eat them. Did we saw enough of Belgium now? If someone has some more ideas where we should go to, speak up or forever hold their peace. If we can find a German guide we can leave for Germany, or will we go to France first? It's up to the rest of you guys!! Please make a choice so we can go, I don't like to wait to long, the world is still big enough so we must hurry a bit. Don't forget to tip the guide on your way out

Hey, Gal, stop trying to get money out of everybody. You were a great guide but you don't need the money. You won the lottery back in Ireland, remember? Or have you blown all of that partying already.
I'm ready to leave for Germany whenever the rest of you are. Hmmmm, wonder if there are any old castles with ghosts there? Hey, don't look at me like that. I promised Uncle Tatters I would try to find his friends and I'm going to do it. It has been such a long time since he has seen them and he really wants them to come for a visit. They were here in Belgium, so maybe they will be in Germany.
Did anyone ever find Ube? I have a real bad feeling about him. I can reach him on his cell phone and he doesn't answer the emails I've sent. Does anyone know if he ever got out of India? Oh well, I guess we can leave directions for him at the hotel desk so he will know where to find us should he come looking.
So when do we leave for Germany?

Oh, and your dodecaëder is very interesting.
How big is it? Does the picture show the actual size of it? Any idea how old it is?
I find it very interesting that with so many being found in the same area that no one has come up with what it was used for yet.
Gal, Seth, LaFille, Ube, and anybody else what do you think it was used for. I am really curious as to what you guys think.

Hey, look everybody. I decided to go shopping and look what I found, a new hat.
It looks like me don't you think? I think I will wear it while we are in Germany, so if I get lost just look for the hat and hopefully it will be me.

@ Shan Nice hat!! Wonder where you bought it? I bet it was on the Black Market in Tessenderlo. About that interesting object Seth told us about, I've already said what I think it was. I think it was a kitty toy. Or maybe an incenseholder? If you hang it on a chain and swing with it? Never know, but if we only knew how big it was, it would be easier to guess. I'm packed for Germany, but who wants to be our guide? If Happyflower gets back, maybe she want to do the honour? And what about Alrik or Stone? Maybe if we ask it really nice? Please? Would anyone of you be our guide? ![[Linked Image]](http://www.cs.helsinki.fi/u/mrozinsk/blogpics/awwww.jpg) Pleeeeaaassse??? ![[Linked Image]](http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/user/sergi/dogs/020611_003_std.jpg) *watch the puppy eyes*

Gal, you weren't suppose to tell everybody where I got the hat. I know two places I want to go while we are in Germany. I've been looking at the travel guide. We have just got to visit Hameln ![[Linked Image]](http://www.army.mod.uk/img/gutersloh/Pied%20Piper%20-%20Hameln.jpg) Hameln town is delightfully situated in the broad Weser valley between two hills, the Klut and the Schweinberg. Hameln is famed as the city of the Pied Piper and on every Sunday in the summer months at 1200 hrs there is a re-enactment of the story. The old town has many half-timbered houses and buildings in the Weser renaissance style. The town is delightful to walk around or to do your shopping. And we have just got to go to Externsteine to see these standing stones. Situated just before the town of Horn - Bad Meinberg. This is a Stone Age settlement (pictured left), where the ancient Germans worshipped the sun. There is a group of bizarre shaped rocks which can be climbed. The highest being nearly 40 metres high. The rocks were once the centre of a pagan shrine and later a place of Christian pilgrimage. There are some pleasant walks around this sight. Now who did you say was going to be our guide through Germany, because I am packed and waiting for the rest of you. Shan

Hey Shan! Great hat! And great new ava too! For the dodecaëder, my bet would be that it is simply a symbolic (cultural/decorative) object, not nessecarly made for a practical purpose. If it is has a practical function of some sort, then I would say that it could be used as a measuring or drawing help tool. As two faces are always lined with each other and that there seems to be different sizes of circular holes in every face, if you place the object between a light source and a plane perpendicular surface (a wall, the ground, etc.) or if you put the source of light inside the object, it can project a circular pattern of light on the surface, like the principle of the stencil or shadow projection techniques. Those projections could be used for technical or calculation purposes, or simply for aesthetic effects. But I agree with the girls that it would help if we knew the size of the object, and if we could see all the sides of the the object (to know if really the circles on each sides aren't the same size, if there is a face that has no circular hole in it, if there are those little shperes at every pentagon corner. It's an interesting device. When we look at discoveries like that, it is often impressive to see how advanced some ancient societies could have been or how sometimes a person could be/have been visionnaire and in advance on the people of its time. If you like things like that, then you might be interested in the story of the Man-nen Dokei; a clock that was invented a century and a half ago and that has just been understood. Well, if you're ready to leave, I am too. Just let me pack my things and it will be ok. I hope the others will show up before we leave or they'll have to join us at our next destination by their own means... Just tell me when we go! Fille

Thanks LaFille. I found it in one of those (well, maybe I should say) places in Belgium. After trying it on, I just knew I had to have it.
Man, where did you go shopping. I think I missed all those places. You arrived with only two suitcases and now you are leaving with (uh, how many was that)? When we get a chance, you are going to have to show me all of your great buys. Since we will still be so close to Belgium, I might want to run back and make a few more purchases for myself.
Hey, you might be able to sneak those in Gal's house and stash them until we get ready to go home. That way you wouldn't have to carry them everywhere. I'm sure she would never notice.
Yeah, I wish we had more info on the dodecaëder. Maybe one day they will finally figure out what it really was.
And yes, I love stuff like that. The more the mystery the more I like it. Your link was great. A clock that would need winding only once a year. Wow, that guy was way ahead of his time kinda like Babbage and his difference and analytical engines (computer).
OK, Gal, if LaFille gets all her bags packed, I think we will be ready to leave for Germany in the morning.

Hey, you might be able to sneak those in Gal's house and stash them until we get ready to go home. That way you wouldn't have to carry them everywhere. I'm sure she would never notice. Of course not, I will only go throught them and keep everything I like for myself So, I guess I see you back in a few days?? Hey Shan, did you also read the story about the Pied Piper? [color:"orange"] In 1284, the town of Hamelin is suffering from a terrible plague of rats. The town council tries everything to get rid of them -- without success. At last, the Mayor promises 1000 florins to the one who can put an end to the plague. A stranger dressed in bright red and yellow clothes shows up and says he can rid Hamelin of the rats. At night, the stranger starts to play a soft tune on a flute, luring all the rats out of the houses and barns towards the river Weser, where they drown. The Mayor refuses to pay the piper: "Playing a tune on a flute is not worth 1000 florins. Get out of Hamelin!" But the piper returns on a Sunday morning, when all the grown-ups are at church. Again he starts to play a tune on his flute. This time, all the children follow him, as he walks out of the gate to the mountains. Suddenly, a cave opens in the mountain. The piper walks into the mountain, still followed by the children, and the cave closes again. The children were never seen again in Hamelin. [/color] And if you like to go shopping I recommand this "Kaufhoff" ![[Linked Image]](http://photos.nondot.org/2003-12-18-Germany/12-22-03/thumbs/01%20-%20Old%20Horton.jpg) Maybe you will find more then Lafille did. If you want you can always drop your luggage at my place?? Still no sign of a German guide? I guess we have to do all this stuff by ourselves again. If only I knew where to look? Maybe Seth knows? Since he can make fun with others About that dodecaëder: I've found a picture that can give you an idea how big it was, or how small. Have fun!!

I've found a solution for my luggage (since I don't really trust Gal's house to be a safe place if I want to find back all my souvenirs when I'll come back to recuperate them). Since we're up to travel for a little while and visit a lot of places, I thought it would be worth it: I rented a depot.
I'm worried; it's been a while we haven't seen Lady Sarah... Maybe she's still on the fiesta, drinking loads of beer in the "buckets" she found? Or maybe is she having some good time in pleasant company? I hope she'll tell us all that when she comes back; we begin to miss her...
And still no news from Ubereil. If he doesn't give a sign soon, we'll have to hire someone to investigate on that...
Since no German fellow shown up to offer guide services, we should go and discover by ourselves. I suggest that we go sneaking at Aachen, for the start; it's right beside the frontier. Read that, it seems tempting:
[color:"pink"] Aachen is love at first sight. Approaching the town, you may not see an imposing skyline, but nature's greenery makes you feel heartily welcome! Aachen lies in a virtual valley, surrounded by fields, woods and hills. At its portals - closeby where three countries meet, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium - you find the nature reserves of the Ardennes and the Eifel. And Aachen exhilarates: its warm water springs have been enjoyed for more than two thousand years! From Roman times there have been good connections with the rest of Europe. Today, the town is reachable by motorways from Cologne and Dusseldorf, Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris. Via the airports of Maastricht/Aachen, Dusseldorf, Cologne and Brussels, or by fast train from Cologne/Dusseldorf, Brussels, Paris/London.
The town is a real pleasure for the pedestrian. The streets invitingly beckon the casual stroller, the lounger. The health cures and the conferences are never far apart, and there is always a worthwhile diversion.
Aachen turns apparent contradictions into a sparkling entity. A metropolis nestling in natural surroundings, with a southern germanic atmosphere, an historic tradition and all the allure of modern living. Is this promising too much? Come and see for yourself! [/color] What do you think about it? My things are stocked, my pack is made; that's whenever you're ready...

Hey, great idea LaFille. I'm not sure I would have thought about stashing my luggage some place like that. It will probably be alot safer than at Gal's. I', not so sure I would trust her not to sneak out a few things and hide them hoping that you wouldn't miss them and ask where they were. She sure was eyeing that one bag of cool clothes that you picked up.
Yeah, I'm packed too. I guess we are just waiting on Gal. Your idea of starting out in Aachen sounds as good a place as any to start. I am ready whenever we can pull Gal away from that suitcase. She's going through it again.
Gal, leave that alone and let's get going. LaFille has already told you that you couldn't have that particular one. The store may have another just like it if you want to go back and check, but you better hurry. We are wasting time and Germany awaits.
Still no message from Ubereil. I sure hope nobody kidnapped him or stuck him in a basket and hauled him away. Do you guys think we should hire a private investigator to look for him?
The last I saw of Lady Sarah she was headed down the road in that camper of hers and I think Seth was in a car behind chasing after her.
Gotta run for now. I need to make some phone calls before we leave. Just yell when you get ready to leave Gal.

I hope we are all set to go, because the train has arrived and it looks like we hav quit a long ride ahead of us. Hey Alrik, of course we wont forget to see the "Dom" of Cologne. Like Seth said you can't miss it, I think it's the largest building in Germany, but I'm not sure. I wonder where Jurak can be? I hope he didn't drink that much Belgian beer that he got drownded? Hey Juuuuuraaaaaak!!!! Maybe he hide himself so he wouldn't be forced to drink our beers? Ok ,Jurak, you can come out now, you wont have to drink anymore, ok? Hey Alrik, why don't you show us the little corners of your country? I'm sure you know enough of Cologne to show us around? It's always better if a German gives us the tour. Ok, I'm off to the nearest tavern because I'm soooo hungry! Heeeey there is a chocolate museum "Schokoladen Museum – This state of the art museum is dedicated to the art of chocolate making. Here you get to know everything you wanted to know about chocolate, the history, technology and best of all you get to sample the chocolate." ![[Linked Image]](http://www.cologne-in.de/museen/fotos/schokoladenmuseum.jpg) Yummie! Who gets there first, will get the pile of Fererro Rochers!!

I'm here! I'm here! I am always so late for everything! I hope I didn't miss too much. I'm currently looking around Berlin. I reminds me of home though. I visited a part of the Berlin wall in Fulton, Missouri, which is not too far from where I grew up. Winston Churchill gave his famous iron curtain speech there. I had a great time though. Who knew that Berlin was so big. It's a good thing I brought a bunch of tourism guides! http://www.berlin-tourist-information.de/bilder/shopping/zara_150.jpgWindow shopping is so much fun. About Berlin & Cologne . I could write many, many things about these towns ... but I don't know if it would be too much ... One page about Cologne (Keulen in het Nederlands) : http://www.koeln.deAnother page about Köln : http://www.stadt-koeln.deIn English : http://www.koeln.de/en/index.htmlhttp://www.stadt-koeln.de/en/koelntourismus/index.htmlUniversity of Cologne : http://www.uni-koeln.deIn English : http://www.uni-koeln.de/index.e.htmlMuseums in Köln : http://www.museenkoeln.dePictures of Köln (a sub-link of the first page I quoted here) : http://files.koeln.de/bildergalerien/index.phpSome of these pages are also available in Francais, although the country's flags (indicating the languages) are *very* small ... Francais : http://www.koeln.de/fr/The really famous Römisch-Germanisches Museum : http://www.museenkoeln.de/roemisch-germanisches-museum/default.aspThe angle from which this photograph has been taken is a bit strange : The photographer sood beneath the meseum, with the "Old Town" (Altstadt) , the oldest part of Cologne, in his back, and behind the Altstadt is the river Rhine (Rhein), famous for wine (like the river Mosel as well). The Dom of Cologne in this photograph is in the same lavel as the Museum - but only on its base. The building is of course *much* higher than the museum. To say the Dom is huge would be an understatement. It's really impressive. We don't say Cathedral or Church, we say Dom to such big churches. We don't have much real Cathedrals in Germany - at least we don't say so. On the far right of this picture, under that bridge, you can see an excavated part of a roman streets that went through Cologne. Cologne is stall full of Archaeology. If a new building is going to be build, Archaeologists must go through it first. The shadowy building on the left side of the picture is the old Diözesan Museum, a museum showing items connected to the church. The new is currently being built. The text reveals the oldest name of Cologne : COLONIA CLAUDIA ARA AGRIPPINENSIUM Agrippina seems to have founded this town, but historians aren't 100% sure about that, because of the lack of details from that time. From today's point of view I'd say Agrippina was a "bitch". Agrippinas ancestor was Augustus, Caligula was her brother, Germanicus her father, Agrippina major her mother. She herself was called Aggrippina minor. I take this from the German-language book "Agrippina, die Stadtgründerin Kölns" by Werner Eck. Her son was Nero. HEr position was extraordinarily strong : Although no "real" Emperor, she had to some times an almost similar position with Claudius, one of her husbands, which she might proably have poisoned, and later with Nero, whom she dominated in that respect. At one point Nero decided to let his mother be killed, and that was her end. I quote here a passage from that book about the founding of Cologne (roghly translating it into English) : "Tacitus reported about the year 50 : 'But Agrippa wanted to show her power to the allied peoples as well; so she set it through that in the town of Ubier in which she had been born a Veterans colony should be founded which had to bear her name.' " The Ubier were a group of "Germanen", as we say here. The English language still says "Germans" about us, although that word rather means one group of peoples in that area. In today's speech, the term "Germanen" means a container of all of these groups, clans etc which were living in the area that is now "Germany". The Ubier were allues of the romans who had been settled down on the left side of the Rhein by them - as allies. And as a puffer against other groups. The Römisch-Germanische Museum contains items from every age of living in Cologne, even tomb marker stones from the earlies stages. I remember one of a solder who had belonged to the group of soldiers that had been defeated by "Hermann the Cherusker". This defeat signalled the withdrawal of romans from the Limes, the border against the "Germanen". But that's a different story. Köln is very famous because if the roman churches ... Well, here in German language, "roman" means mainly the architectural "style" of the building. Buildings from every century have their own architectural styles, and the "roman" style is very simple, simple buildings with relatively small windows and simple bows above them. The other extreme is the gotischer Stil (gothik style), resuulting in *very* very high bows above the windows, like seen with the Dom of Cologne. So Gotik doesn't mean in German language the thing you know from English language; instead, it's meanly only the architectural style. The "Gothic" meaning has seemingly been re-imported from English language into German again. These roman churches are very old. In fact, some of them are *really* roman - I mean they were build in the times of the roman empire, when the christian religion was spreading. I have recently the curious report of one church ... don't know which one ... I read that this church had *originally* been a tomb for a member of the Emperor's family ... the building is still well preserved with original walls up into the height of 14 metres (or were it 4 metres ?) , I read. Sorry, but I don't know anything more about it. I have been in the chocolate museum. The term "chocolate comes from south-american origins, for example xocolatl, a mixture of cacao and pepper and some other spices.

Well Alrik, you are really one hell of a good guide!! I'm very impressed by you. And very tired too, man Cologne IS a very big city. Can we please go to sleep?? Hey Lady Sarah, nice of you to decide to jump in but you are going to fast for us girl! We are still in Cologne. And we need a place to sleep too, so hurry to Cologne and please be careful. Allthough I've heard that the drivers in Germany are very careful drivers. Except for that dangerous driver we here so much about. I think he rides a BMW or something? So everyone watch out for him ok? Since I'm too tired to wait for Lady Sarah's camper, I think I'm gonna find me a great hotel and take a long hot shower and sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep!!!! My hotel bedroom

Glad to have some news of you, Lady Sarah! Since you're into shopping, I offer you some place in my depot, if you get too encumbered. We'll have to hold a stocktaking list though, since we might end up not remembering all that we bought and that somebody here seems tempted to sneak and sevre herself in my discoveries... I wouldn't want the same thing to happen to you... The chocolate museum was great. I loooove chocolate. There is nothing better, more efficient than eating chocolate when you have an energy drop/sugar lack. T is also a well known antidepressant & aphrodisiac. Long before people from the old continent discovered it, the native peoples from South America were consuming very much of it and it was venerated; the beans were used mostly to make a beverage and/or a paste with different seasonings (mainly chili pepper), and the leaves were smoked. It was also used for its medical qualities to to cure diarrhea and dysentery. About chocolate. I began my tour of the town by the most evident, I went to visit the Dom; the building and the collection in there are highy impressive... After that I was “having worms in my pants”, as we say in Quebec for someone who needs to move, so I lined up for the Cologne visit by foot and did the Roman route, the mediaeval route and the ciruit along the Rhine. Destinations to come: the botanical gardens and the museums. Anyone's up for it? Thank you very much, Alrik, for all this info on Cologne (and in all languages, even french wow!). I guess we're to stay here for some days to see all that! It seems like Germany is one of the heavens for archaeologists & anthropologists. The first Neanderthal man fossil was discovered here and got his name from the place where he was found, the Neander valley. We still don't really know if the Neanderthal man is an ancestor of the Homo Sapiens or if it is an Homininae specie that evolved to a "dead end" and was replaced by the Homo Sapiens from Africa. Most last discoveries seem to point to the second theory. There is also a third theory, less relevant though, that says that the two species could have cohabited and even reproduced together. It is a very interesting subject. Well I'm gonna go to bed too I think. All these walks have left me *yawn* so tired...
