Dog saves newborn abandoned in Kenyan forest
CTV.ca News Staff

A newborn abandoned in a Kenyan forest was reportedly saved by a dog that nestled the child among her own litter of puppies.

According to witnesses, the dog found the two-week-old baby girl on the outskirts of Nairobi, the Kenyan capital, on Friday. The baby is believed to have been dumped there in a plastic bag.

Stephen Thoya told Kenya's Daily Nation newspaper that he saw the dog carry the baby across a busy road.

"I had just reached Lenana Forest when I heard the sound of a baby crying. I looked closely and I saw a dog carrying a baby wrapped in a black dirty cloth as it crossed the road," said Thoya.

"I was shocked at first and when I tried to get a closer look, the dog ran through the fence and disappeared along a dirt road."

The mixed-breed dog is said to have carried the baby through a barbed wire fence to a shed, where she was found.

The baby girl, christened "Angel" by hospital workers caring for her, was wrapped in a plastic bag when the dog found her, said Aggrey Mwalimu, owner of the shed.

"When the dog picked up the baby in a dirty bag, it came and dropped her behind the wooden building where the dog has its puppies," Mwalimu told The Associated Press Monday.

The mud-splattered baby was eventually rescued after two children reported hearing an infant's cries.

"I followed them outside and we started looking around the compound and a nearby plot," said Mary Adhiambo, the children's mother.

They found the dog lying protectively with a puppy beside the baby, Adhiambo said. There are conflicting reports on whether the dog was a stray or belonged to Adhiambo.

She told the Daily Nation that she fed the child, used warm water to wash her, and cleaned the umbilical cord with rubbing alcohol.

The infant was then taken to a nearby police station before she was admitted to Kenyatta National Hospital, where officials say she is doing well, The Associated Press reported.

Hannah Gakuo, spokeswoman of the Kenyatta National Hospital, said doctors believe the seven-pound, four-ounce newborn was abandoned about two days before the dog found her.

"She cried a lot during admission, because her umbilical cord was infected," Gakuo said.

"She is now very quiet. She just feeds and sleeps. I was there this morning and she looked at me and yawned, looked at me again and yawned."

"She is now fine. She is warm. She is in a separate room ... with a lady who is also nursing a baby admitted in hospital for treatment," Gakuo said.

"The lady is looking after her as if she is her own child."

Dozens of Kenyans have visited the newborn as news of her rescue gets around. The Kenyan newspaper also reports that offers of adoption have poured in.

Although there are no confirmed figures, infant abandonment is a problem in Kenya because of extreme poverty and failed relationships, officials have said.

At least this is one abandonned baby story that ends well; they're quite rare...
That story reminded me of the Jungle Book tale, in wich the abandonned baby Mowgli is adopted by a mother wolf and raised with her pups.

First read this story.
The story of Emmett Till The murderers got out of jail after a few days.

Little Emmet became a martyr, a symbol for the many thousands black people that had been murdered in the same circumstances, but this horrible murder would mean a time point for the civil rights of the black people.
Today, after 60 years of injustice, the American Court had decided to re-open the case of Emmett Till, and finally let justice be done. Sadly enough, the two men who killed the boy back then, both died.
But still, I hope that people will finally learn to live together, no matter what color, religion or sexual prefence. Today there is still a lot of anger between people, where it really shouldn't be.
I hope that one day, people will live in peace.[Linked Image]

School Has Never Been This Fun!

The staff of Virginia's private Alexandria Country Day School will be a little more careful about where they store their leftovers the next time they have a party. The staff, faculty, and Board of Trustees had a Mexican-themed dinner complete with margaritas. Apparently, they stuck the leftover liquor in a school refrigerator. Can you figure out what happened next? That's right, the booze was mistaken for "limeade" by school workers and was served to students at lunch. The mix-up happened because the school ran out of milk and the alcohol had no negative effects on the students, who "sipped it and said that it didn't taste good." The embarrassed school head Alexander Harvey promised parents that booze will now be banned on campus.

Scientists Figure Out Why Women Are Bad At Math

According to Rex Jung, a psychology professor at the University of New Mexico, there’s actually some SCIENCE behind the chauvinism.

Jung and his colleagues gave men and women intelligence tests…then studied whether the subjects used GREY or WHITE BRAIN MATTER to answer questions.

Turns out…men use six-and-a-half time more GREY MATTER than women…and grey matter is directly related to math, map-reading and information processing.

Women use NINE times more WHITE MATTER than men…which is connected to emotional thinking, use of language and multi-tasking.

Really Old Dog About To Turn 27 Years Old

Jerry is one old dog that doesn't need to learn any new tricks.

Jerry turns 27 next month -- which is really old for a dog. A veterinarian in Australia said the mongrel cattle dog could become the world's oldest living canine.

When Jerry turns 27, he'll be the human equivalent of a staggering 189 years old. The oldest living dog according to the Guinness record book is Butch, a 27-year-old beagle in Virginia.

Dr. Honey Nelson said Jerry is in such good shape, he could push on to 28.

Owner Waddie Harris said Jerry's Outback lifestyle contributes to his longevity. He notes that Jerry has grown up on kangaroo, rabbit and emu meat.

Woman drove escapee around for 3 hours

STUART, Fla. - A Florida woman unwittingly drove a fugitive who escaped from a state prison work crew around town for three hours before safely making her way back home, officials said.

Worried relatives and detectives were waiting for Charlotte Yoder when she returned Tuesday. She had been with William Hawley, who had walked away from his road crew from a Martin Correctional Institution work camp and ditched his prison scrubs.

"She got a little weak in the knees when she realized what could have happened," sheriff's Sgt. John Silvas said. Yoder told Silvas that she never felt threatened by Hawley.

"He was very nice," Silvas said. "They talked about religion, family."

Hawley, 41, told Yoder that his wife or girlfriend was ready to deliver their baby, his car had broken down and he needed a cab. Yoder offered to drive him, taking Hawley to five medical centers in two counties.

She also gave him $20 for a meal at a fast-food restaurant in Port St. Lucie. He was last seen getting into a sport utility vehicle with two women. The career criminal was still missing early Wednesday.

Hawley was serving a 10-year term for a police chase and burglary, theft and cocaine charges.

Witches Selling Spells To Cast Away Unlucky Day

HOOPESTON, Ill. (Wireless Flash) – Today is Friday the 13th, but the unlucky day can be cast away thanks to a witch school which sells their spells.
Wiccans at the Witch School, a real life school for aspiring sorcerers, have concocted a batch of spells which they are selling in stores across the U.S.

The spell kits have themes like “healing,” “love attraction,” “money,” and “protection” and include a ceremonial candle with an enchantment wrapped around it describing how to cast a spell.

However, Witch School spokesman Ed Hubbard says they aren’t selling any “dark and evil” spells because, as he puts it, “We don’t deal in curses.”

Hubbard insists the goody-two-shoe spells work if the directions are followed correctly and should be cast on oneself rather than another for maximum effect.

He believes wannabe broom-flyers in their late 20s to early 30s will be the biggest market for the $1 spell kits because “they are the sons and daughters of hippies” and thus, would be more familiar with alternative practices.

Stripped of pensions, flight attendants do likewise

CHICAGO - While some United Airlines employees are using placards and pamphlets to protest the loss of their pensions, a group of flight attendants is taking a more risque tack - showing some skin to publicize their plight.

The five women, ranging in age from 55 to 64, posed for a 2006 calendar that depicts them in various states of undress in front of a vintage plane, on a park bench and on a plane's wing, among other locations. Reflecting a mix of humor and anger, it was released to coincide with a bankruptcy court's approval this week of United's plan to terminate $9.8 billion in employee pension obligations.

While United is never named nor its airplanes shown, every photograph in "Stewardesses Stripped (Of Their Pension?)" is accompanied by a zinger related to the record pension default by the Elk Grove Village, Ill.-based airline.

"Coffee, tea, or me without a pension?" reads one. "Marry me, fly free - but don't expect anything from my pension," says another. And the cover shot: "Are your butts covered? We thought ours were too."

Retired flight attendant Connie Baker, the project's creator and one of its photo subjects, says it was inspired by the 2003 film "Calendar Girls" about the real-life story of a group of older British women who posed naked for a calendar to raise charity money.

"I thought if these English women can do this, we flight attendants can definitely do it," said Baker, 59, who lives outside Phoenix.

The real driving force, though, was United's announcement last summer that it intended to stop funding its pensions and dump them on the government's pension agency, which by law can guarantee just $6.6 billion of the total.

Baker, who started working for United in 1967 when flight attendants were called stewardesses, now is bracing for her $2,800-a-month pension to be cut roughly in half.

"You can't really live on that," she said. "How am I going to live on 50 percent of it?"

But Baker wants it known that this isn't all about being bitter. She hopes some good can come from it, and not just the percentage of calendar and T-shirt sales that the women will donate to charity.

"We wanted to create a little humor in people's lives, make it fun, while at the same time getting our message across," she said.

"I wanted to raise awareness for people out there that it can happen to you, and you have to take care of yourself. You have to take an active role in your retirement. Don't depend on a company to do it for you, even if you've worked there your whole career."

Her husband, Bruce Baker, took the photos. The other retirees photographed are Linda Andrews, 59, and Rosemary Esparza, 64. Baker did not want to name the other two since they are active flight attendants for United.

Lemonade Stand raises almost $11,000 U.S.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - How much are 1,500 cups of water, fruit juice and sugar worth?

Almost $11,000 US. That's how much Alex's Lemonade Stand raised at the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks last weekend. The Lemonade Stand takes donations for a cup, and donates the money to children's cancer research. A few people gave $100, said Liz Scott, mother of Lemonade Stand founder Alexandra Scott.

Alexandra, diagnosed with cancer two days before her first birthday, started the stand when she was four to raise money for her hospital. Alexandra was eight when she died in August.

Even non-humans helped out. A portion of third-place finisher Afleet Alex's winnings were also donated.

Liz Scott, from Wynnewood, Pa., had been to the races before, "but it's the first time I really paid attention," she said Wednesday.

Afleet Alex is trained by Tim Ritchey and was ridden by Jeremy Rose in the Derby.

"To meet them and see how much all of them were so committed to helping Alex's Lemonade Stand and express how honoured they were to be helping out in any way they could really touched me," Scott said. "They expressed that this had more meaning to them. This was a victory for them, win or lose, to have Alex's Lemonade Stand there and to be representing it."

Alex's Lemonade Stand has also been invited to the Preakness on May 21. Scott is pursuing the goal her daughter set of raising $5 million in 2005.

Last week at Churchill Downs, a breeding season to Northern Afleet, Afleet Alex's sire, was auctioned for $37,000 - all of it going to the lemonade stand. The winning bid was $37,000, by B. Wayne Hughes, who had two horses in the Derby: Don't Get Mad, who was fourth; and Greeley's Galaxy, who was 11th.

Sauerkraut triggers alarm at Osan mall, post office

-'Suspicious package' delays grand opening of new mail facility-

OSAN AIR BASE, South Korea — A parcel of sauerkraut passing through chemical-sensitive mail-scanning equipment in the new base post office here Friday triggered a “suspicious package” alert, forcing officials to call off the post office’s grand opening ceremony.

They also evacuated the Osan Shopping Mall, which adjoins the post office.

The incident occurred at 11:25 a.m., five minutes before the ceremony, at which 51st Fighter Wing commander Brig. Gen. Maury Forsyth was to make remarks.

Officials did not immediately determine whether it was the sauerkraut or something in its packaging that affected the ion-scan equipment, used to screen out hazardous materials.

“The package was safe and verified as not containing any hazardous materials,” a base spokesman said later.

“Today was the first day of operation” of the post office, the spokesman said. “So it’s open for business now and people are going in to get their mail.”

The grand opening ceremony was to be rescheduled for some time early this week, the spokesman said.
