Didnt' read about the children (too long text <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />), but the Trurkmenistan thing is what I would call sick...

And now something totally different:

What most boys allways dreamed about <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />.

The weirdest thing I've ever read about is an article which said Belgium doesn't exist. Tried to find it, but it had been replaced with this. Hmm....

Where should I post it ? I decide to post it here, because I cannot imagine a better place.

In the topday's edition of a local newspaper, the "Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger", there is an article about a DVD about the US troops going into Cologne (Köln = Cologne) in 1945, partly made with - as the article states - previously unreleased material.

Source : http://www.koeln1.tv

General information about the DVD :

Quote
Hermann Rheindorf : 1945 - Kriegsende in Köln, DVD (85 Minuten) Emons Verlag Köln (ISBN 3-89705-382-9) , 19,80 Euro.

This Article is about the DVD : "Die Kamera folgt den US-Truppen bis in den Dom".

Alrik.

By the way, HandE, it doesn't make much sense to post links to articles here where one must register first to be able to rad them. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

If I could post in the name of anonymous, I would have definately liked to post a story that I remember. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shhh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/silly.gif" alt="" />

@Wallace
Go on, we want to hear what you have to say! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />
<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shhh.gif" alt="" /> If you want, we'll forget that it's you who told it... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shhh.gif" alt="" />

Here is the story of sombody I knew in the past:

This man was camping with friends and they had decided to go swimming in a lake nearby. In the lake was already another man and the level of the water was seeming to be at his chest's height. So the guy started running, jumped on an elevated stone and dove in the lake.

Later on, in the hospital, he told us: "As I was in the air, I saw that the man on the lake was in fact... sitting down."

Now he's on a wheelchair for the rest of his life. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />

As he says himself when he tells what happened to him: "The moral of this story is: watch out because things are not always what they seem". <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

It happened over 10 years ago if not more. He now lives it well and even consider his story as a joke.

@Lews: You choose a strange season to come to Canada... You risk meeting snowsorms (at least on the eastern part of the country) and beautiful, fun things like that <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" /> Anyway, have a nice trip! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wave.gif" alt="" />

(dwm)

Swedish tv-station anounces (accidently) dead of pope.

(Belga)The biggest tv-station of Sweden, SVT, has accidently declared pope John Paul II dead. Becouse the 84 year old leader of the church is very ill, they had prepared an in memoriam, and that showed up on their website.

After 5 hours they corrected it. "Someone has pushed a wrong button" is what a spokeswoman of SVT said.
A spokeswoman of the catolic church in Sweden said to be "disapointed" but that they forgive them.
"It was a mistake, everybody makes mistakes. In any case, you should be very careful with any anouncement about a dead" is what she said.

Female Italian Journalist got free, but was accitentally attacked by U.S. troops.

I cannot understand this.

Another schocking thing is this :

Olive Trees are cut down and used as burning stuff for ovens in Italy and elsewhere.

The shoking thing about this is

- they were very old

- they need decades to properly grow fruit

- there are commercial interests behind that

- the journalist mentioned in the article was beaten down by several persons as he tried to film such an act of cutting down. This leads to Mafia, he says.

- the lands - exposed to the strong sunlight - will soon overheat - they will face an ecological desaster there (well, personally I think the word "desaster" is too weak. Everything will get burned.).

- the people don't realize that they can let them cut down only ONCE.

To sum it up, I'm totally shocked. Olive treesarealmost sacrd to me (deep emotional feeling). I'm feeling helpless and full of sorrow. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/sad.gif" alt="" />

They said nothing about that on the news here. Just that she was free. Maybe they're already trying to cover it up. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/memad.gif" alt="" />

@Alrik
On the other topic.
That has been going on for a long time in Italy.
And not just to olive trees.
Local goverments are corrupted. They let everyone with enough $$$ or with the right (maffia) connections chop wood anywhere.
Remember all the landslides that flood whole villages after heavy rainfall in the latest years?
Those happened becouse of that. When the trees are gone, the earth gets very dry (like you said) and loose. Before it was "held together" by the roots of the trees.
Then when it rains heavely all this loose soil starts to flow from the mountains. Creating gigantic rivers of mud.
You can see it as a tsunami on land in a way.
<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />
Lots of (mostly regional) environmental organisations have been protesting against it. And after a couple of major disasters it seemed to have come to a stand still.
But only for a short time I fear. Till the eyes of the world are on other things again. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/sad.gif" alt="" />

I share your feeling on that.
Nature is always the first victim of the economy. There has been something similar in British-Columbia some years ago. People were cutting a rare, fragile and long-time-growing native conifer specie (a treasure!) and were even selling it on the black market. Things like that should just not happen in such developped and educated countries. That's unforgivable.
But the worse case of all these kinds of stories is absolutely the case of the Amazonian forest, the lung of the earth. When will people realise? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/puppyeyes.gif" alt="" />

My zoologist and ecologist heart bleeds for such stories... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/puppyeyes.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cry.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/puppyeyes.gif" alt="" />

Aye, that's the same as in Alrik's German post above.
On the news in Belgium they only said she was free and that there waren't more details yet.

I heard tonight on the news (radio 4 FM) that the Italian journalist was hurt by american troops and she is free now and that the biggest tv-station in Sweden has announced the dead of the pope. Nothing yet on the cutting of precious olivetrees, but I think that's enough for one day I guess?? Why do all of these probablly interesting articles have to be in languages I don't speak <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cry.gif" alt="" />?

About the corruptionin Italy: what can you expect from a country where Silvio Berlusconi is the prime minister? (I'm curious how he got there in the first place...)

You're right about Italy.
But that's just a point. How can something like that happen today in a western country... so called civilised countries.
<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />
And it's happening more and more again. Italy, where Berlusconi has all the power, Russia, where Poetin has all the power, USA, where Bush does as he please, Belgium, where 4 leaders of the goverment act like gods and obey one Walloon politician who's the real puppet master, ... almost all eastern european countries and african countries, ...
We're going back (are already there) to an age of dictatorships.

And I posted something about Sweden.
I guess it must have been a big joke there too. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
