Hi everyone

Apologies in advance for a long post...

I have played through the game all the way up to collecting the members of the Council of Seven, and have not rung the Bell yet because-- I still have quests hanging out there that I can't seem to solve!

One of two things happens. The first thing is (seemingly) just a minor annoyance: I complete a quest and get my reward(s) in experience or whatever the NPCs might want to give me, but then the Quest does not log itself as completed, and therefore, remains in my journal as unresolved. This is happening with the Marcus wanting information about his goods quest, which was long ago completed.

But the second thing that happens is sort of puzzling: I receive a Quest, but cannot seem to get the NPCs to have the correct dialogue with me in order to get them done, and move on to subsequent quests in the chain where appropriate. Specifically, this is happening with General Alix and Captain Mitox. General Alix "gives me the sealed letter" (although nothing shows up in my inventory, which might be the problem??), which I should then take to Mitox to solve that quest and then be able to get the quests to destroy the Orc invasion (poisoning the well and blowing up the supply train). But I get to Mitox, and have a short dialogue with him in which I ask what happened in the area, and why the Orcs began a war... and then... nothing happens! No message from General Alix to deliver, Alix keeps telling me I should go see Mitox because he must have an important assignment for me, and Mitox keeps saying something to the effect of, "Back so soon, freebooter? What can I do for you?" and me having nothing to say but, "Farewell."

I have never been able to receive the Orc quests from Mitox, they are not in my journal at all, likely because I seem to have no letter to deliver. The 'replacement items' help posts seem a bit over my head, and for the amount of gameplay lost by want of solving this quest after my progress through every other area of the game, I guess I should just skip over it, as I have already blasted the Orc Camp to smithereens by hand for the experience and weapon sales, and have passed through Stormfist Castle already by exposing the Duke's murder.

Additionally, and this is probably my fault, I cannot solve the Nericon's Garden quest. One night whilst trying to uncover all of Rivertown before proceeding to the Dark Forest, I managed to pick open the lock of Nericon's Garden *before* Blake sold me the key. Now, with Nericon's Holy Book in hand, and the unused key in my inventory (I have also tried taking all keys out of my inventory just to see what happens), and after killing the frogs and exploring the area behind the portal, I cannot get the statue to converse with me, therefore leaving this quest unsolved. Neither Blake nor the Cultists have anything to say about it, other than the Cultists telling me they don't want the key (when I ask why I should give it to them), they just want me to open the gate (but I cannot tell them it already *is* open). Is it because I used alternate means to get inside the garden? If so, well... that stinks for me!

Also, it is seeming to me that I cannot resolve the Trevor/Tingalf quest. I have the manuscript evidence from the sewer/thief base, but do not have the option of discussing my findings with Trevor (note though, that I have already had Tingalf arrested, and also, the Marcus quest never disappeared from my journal, as noted previously, although it was solved. Maybe one of these is the reason, or I am missing something??)

So I don't know what's going on... maybe a combination of my own mistakes, a stubborn journal, and what seems to be one missing item...

I have tried deleting everything in the Dynamic folder, but all it seems to have changed is that now everything runs at hyperspeed-- my character runs like a jackrabbit and all the animations are running in FPS overdrive (which, in itself is kind of cool, because apparently purging the files eliminated some sort of framerate slowdown I didn't know I was having), but it did not solve my unsolved quest/quest logging issue. Also, I went through the game only using the default 2 quicksave slots, so I have no savegames to revert to (and I am learning just what a mistake such a practice can be).

Does anyone know about any of these things/possible solutions?

Ringing the gong will reset your quest log, so any remaining entries will be cleared when you move to the next and final area (one way trip).

For the Marcus / Tingalf quest, did you join the merchant's guild and ask the head of it if there was anything you could do for them? He gives you part of the quest (if you have already had Tingalf arrested, you should just be able to say so to complete that part of the quest).
If you already did that, I wouldn't worry about the quest entry. That quest is fairly involved, and seems to be easy to partially break by doing things in too unexpected an order.

After talking to general Alix, did you enter the castle before talking to Mitox, or did you do that right away? If you entered the castle first, that could be the problem. If not, I'm not sure what it is (don't recall if you actually get a sealed letter in your inventory or not). In any case, the experience you would get from poisoning the well and blowing up the suply train are not enough to worry too much about missing.

The cult followers react to your talking to the statue, rather than opening the gate. As long as you have the correct book in your inventory, the statue should speak to you, though you only get one chance to answer its questions. Had you spoken to it and answered the questions correctly, you would have gotten a level of Restoration as a reward. You could use iZakaroN's SaveEditor (or from Kiya's site, with description) to give yourself a spare skill point to add to Restoration, to make up for the game 'cheating' you out of that reward. Using Lockpick to get in should not cause any problems.

Thanks for the welcome!

I looked over my conversation logs and came up with the following:

-After exposing Malcom's financial misdeeds to Trevor, I was granted membership to the Merchant's Guild and received the quest about Tingalf. I went back to Ars Magicana and exposed Tingalf to Marcus, receiving my reward, but the quest did not leave my journal. I then notified Lt. Robin about Tingalf, who subsequently disappeared to jail. Then I went to Stormfist Castle, having exposed the Duke's murder in between time (As you said of the Mitox quests, maybe the Castle is a quest breaker). After that, I returned to Verdistis, where Trevor and I never had anything further to say about Tingalf, even if I have the incriminating evidence with me. So that quest goes *poof*.

-I definately visited Mitox before going to the Castle. A point of interest is that since I never got anywhere with Mitox, I never got the scroll of the Human Race from him, as I have heard that's supposed to be where you get it-- I believe I pilfered the scroll from some dungeon somewhere, or perhaps found it in Verdistis or the Castle, I can't remember, but it definately did not come from Mitox, which meant I had a game full of jogging fun until I finally did find the scroll elsewhere. So, that string of quests goes *poof*.

-As for the statue in the garden, it never spoke with me at all, and though I still have the book, I still cannot initiate a conversation with it. So that quest goes... I think we see the emerging pattern.

So then, having come up with no solution for these quests, I guess it's time to stop crying over spilled milk and just ring the Bell I just feel that little twinge of 'incompleteness' moving forward without having truly seen everything the way it's supposed to go... But I guess that's why I should play it all over again when I'm finished!

The other human teleporter scroll was from the basement of the cursed abbey.

Sauerkraut - I know it from Bavaria. Tasts sour, but not bad, I'm used to eat to together with bavarian-style meals. My mother comes from there, so we eat a lot of this kind of meals (not all of them with Sauerkraut, though. )

Alrik.

LOL Alrik, You're not the first to notice my somewhat strange username-- to tell the truth, I'm actually not the sauerkrautiest person in the world; I don't put it on my hot dogs, don't eat it with kielbasa... actually, don't eat it at all! The nickname comes from a fabled tradition from the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team (yeah, I know they were terrible in the last season that was actually -played- in the NHL), of eating sauerkraut if you were in a scoring slump. It worked wonders for one team member that was on their 2x Stanley Cup championship roster in the early 90s, and he told Martin Straka in the 2001-2002 season to eat sauerkraut before the next game, since he had been having trouble scoring goals...

And so it came to pass that Marty did indeed eat the sauerkraut, and went on to record a flurry of goals, as no great surprise to his sauerkraut-loving mentor. Thereafter, good old Marty was known as The Sauerkraut Kid, and my username was born...

So if you play hockey, or know someone that does, don't forget to heed the sauerkraut advice if you need to score more goals

And thanks for the heads-up Raze, I knew I got it in a dungeon somewhere

Lol, I am glad to oblige! *feels all special*

I have since defeated Divine Divinity (thanks for the help, I might play again, and see if any of these issues come out differently the second time), what fun! Now I am compelled to get Beyond Divinity, I had way too much fun playing the original, and just can't tolerate leaving a good cliffhanger stand
