The only real approach to Lionheart is 'brutal thug with magic support'. The spells will sometimes be useful, but you don't want to go full mage under any circumstancers. The only thing worse would be to create a charming/talky character - who would breeze through the first section but never complete the game.
The first half is a wonderful game - superior to nearly anything else out there. The second half is an atrocity.
