@ Draggy -> my guess is synthesizer plus sampling/mixing.

anyone listen to Future Sound Of London? i love their music, especially ones released under the pseudonym Amorphus Androgynous (the album Isness).

i used to love Chemical Brothers (1st two albums only) but the later albums are too bland. Orbital is one of my best-loved, especially the earlier efforts.

the band that i don't really like is Crystal Method; too typical. at least ChemBro has very impressive sampling/mixing techniques.

when it comes to trip-hop, my one & only is DJ Shadow. that dude is the Elvis of turntables. i'm hoping to get his latest dvd featuring live performances.

leftfield is another great musicmaker.

I guess you should really look into Alan Parson's "A Valid Path" ! There are several bands in it ...

talk of electronica, i've been wondering about the future sound of it all; with electronica merging with all sorts of genre, which electronica itself was a child of many genres sampled in an aural soup.

now what about the movement of electronica? what i can see in movement of rock turn rawk radiohead, an 'alternative' group of sorts now turning into grey areas between pop, rock & electronica (on the obscure sampling & ambient sides). then there is this body of work of james lavelle aka UNKLE who's diversified in styles, but i am more impressed with his acoustic-electronica sampling styles. it feels 'live' & yet it's sampling all over.

electronica normally has that cold feel to it but

- Orbital (especially their early works) infuse that human-feel to their music.
- UNKLE somehow found harmony between electronic/sampling with acoustic performance.
- DJ Shadow with his retro trip-hop with very warm (think tube/valve instead of transistor) feel to his music.
- Amorphus Androgynous (especially the album Isness) with their retro funk feel which refreshingly feels 'natural' though u know it's sampled.

my favs are often always those who are not restrained by the genre they play in; rather they play without much concept of genre.

for future of electronica:

i would say electronic music founded in "tech error/mistake"...

Matmos, Kid 606, Lesser, Morgan Geist, Blectum from Blecdom, D84 (aka Bevin fom Blectum sometimes near a part in Lesser) in US...

Some german and austrian records labels are entirely dedicaced to it in europe.

this is entirely trans-genre as all what i've spoke about (except maybe Charlemagne Palestine... and yet).

Morsheeba... i really loved the only record i have (the second one, IIRC)... Never really been really listenning to other ones though.

DJ Shadow... I like it... Imo, he is just the most known of a number of people who had done real great things trying to make real music with "instrumental hip hop" though...

Ninja Tunes: yep ... could have put them in the list too! good label.

yes, technically that's true. but if u are to look into UNKLE & its history, it seems that Lavelle is the one making sure UNKLE stays alive. well that is what i gathered unless my info is wrong.

people, do u think Portishead is also electronica? a trip-hop kind maybe?

true, Lavelle is the one that keeps UNKLE alive but he's not alone in that project

my best guess is that Portishead is a hybrid (oh and by the way HYBRID too is interesting as far as breakbeat goes...

well u deserve it. who asked u to open this thread so we can ask lots of confusing questions?

@ Alrik -> Al, i think u're quite a rarity in the sense that u love the old school style of synth music. me, i don't really like it. i don't like those typical techno music played in clubs too. too repetitive.

hey people, do u think it's strange to listen to electronica music as u would other music? i mean most electronica are for dance while i think it's weird for me to listen to it via headphone while relaxing on my chair, or reading books.

club music / the electronica tunes made for dancing are deriving from the old school techno but it has become somewhat commercial in the way that nobody actually listens and appreciates the sound, but try to keep up the rhythm...it's true that some of the music played in some clubs is listened to and "felt" like it should but this is rare and is getting rarer every day...

Last week (Monday, to be exact) I was on a concert of Manfred Mann's Earth Band (yes, they still exist !). As I listened to Manfred Mann playing his various Synthesizers and Keyboards, I thought : This is a good example of how to make good music via electronic equipment ! Of course they have Guitar, Bass and Drums as well, so it's not entirely Electronica, but the keyboards are distinctive. Plus the great vioces of the singers.

I'd guess if you like Electronica, you might take a look at this band, as well. The Mighty Quinn, Davy's on the oad again, and Blinded by the Light are simply classics.
