"Die Siedler" (it's the German title) are *extremely* popular here in Germany.
Basically it's a SIMulation, with some real-time combat.
What made the game so popular is the look of the tiny little men, and how they are walking around. This is called "the cuteness-factor", or regarding the way they walk, the "Wusel-Faktor". This way of tiny little men walking around in a town, doing this, doing that, with cute animations is what we call "wuseln" (it's a verb) in German.
Here in Germany we have reached the Settlers 5, which has been a big break with former traditions. No Wusel-Faktor anymore, but rather RPG-style elements.
Settlers 5 was Co-Developed by Funatics, who made their own Settlers-clone, "Cultures", about which people often say it is "the better settlers". What Stone is about Gothic is Alix about Cultures.
If you like this kind of play, I can higly recommend the Cultures !
The sttlers have another very important factor : What we call "Wi-Sim" in German. "Wi" stands for "Wirtschaft", and that means "economy". It goes like this : For training soldier, you need weapons. For weapons you need a smith and a house that can melt ore. For the ore, you need a mine. For the smith you need wood. You've got to build all of these houses, which are connected through workers who bring the needed materials to them, and from them. These many workers, "wuseling" around are something more that enhances the "Wusel-Faktor".
Well, as I said : The differences between 5 and the former ones are the most striking ones. They (the devs) said they eleminated the "Wusel" from the Settlers and wanted them to look more "mature" to increase sales outside Germany, where the game - as I heard it - was never so widely accepted just because of the "cuteness" which made it so popular here.
