Hi,
i just installed DD on my linux-box (after some trouble).
And of course, i wanted to play it, so i typed :

[email]alucard@dD5E00A87:~/Desktop/Divine[/email] Divinity> wine div.exe

and wine notified me that i had to disable the debugger.
But after some searching, i remarked that i could not find a way to do that.

So my question is: Does DD have a debugger, and if so, how do i disable it?

Hello benjamin and wecome to the forum !

Which wine version did you use ?

If you not running the latest version of <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> (1.34) then install the latest patch for <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> please and your problem should be gone. I described the install procedure for the patches in section 4.2 on the Divinity on Linux page.

If you have questions please contact me !

Benjamin, your old wine version should work fine but the new one should work too.

Ok, now we should try your problem:

Did you have a ati graphic card ? If you have one then please change in your ~/.wine directory the config file section "x11drv" to

Code
...
[x11drv]
...
"DGA" = "N"
...

If this doesn't help then please add your wine config file this (near simliars entries)

Code
...
[AppDefaults\\div.exe\\x11drv]
"Managed" = "Y"
"Desktop" = "800x600"
...

Where the values for "Desktop" should be the same as you configure <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" />.

Personally I used for my testing this above values on a 1024x768 (1280x800) screen because the game doesn't run in fullscreen (but big enough to see something) and I can look into the messages which appear on the X-terminal (aterm in my case).

Which distro (and version) did you use, Benjamin ?

I have indeed an ATI card (radeon 9250)
So, i did what you have said to me, but to no avail.

Got myself SuSE 9.2 <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/freak.gif" alt="" />
Oh, and i also got WineX ( if it matters to you) <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif" alt="" />

and here are some errors:

Did you use the closed source ati driver or the driver from Xorg / XFree86 ?

I have a ati card too, but the closed source ati driver doesn't work on my system (didn't run a fully 64bit linux system and the 32bit part of the closed source ati driver is for my system broken). I tested <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> on linux with an ati graphic card only with the driver from Xorg (version 6.8.2).

If you use the closed source at driver it is possible for you the switch back to the driver from Xorg or XFree86 ?

Came your posted error messages from Wine or WineX (aka Cedega) ?

Do your use the DirectX mode for <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> on linux, right ?
Please switch back to the DirectDraw or Software mode because this mods are faster an better developed as the DirectX mode !

appear only, if you run <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> in the directx mode (I tested this out which a new installation of wine 20050419 and removing all wine config files) or from which wine version did you get the above error messages ?

Can you change the screen color depth to 16 bit an tell me if this work for you ?

The ati closed source driver is a driver which are developed by ATI and this driver includs a better 3D support for their graphic cards. Maybe SuSE installed this driver when you choose "3D acceleration" support ? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif" alt="" />

Sorry for this trouble benjamin ! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />

On the text console: Please login as user "root" and the password of "root" !

Then enter "yast" and a simliar program like the yast control program on the graphical interface will appear (maybe this can be taking some time, dont worry, it should start).

Then you must look for somehting similar the "X server configuration". If you found this, start it and configure your screen color depth back zu 24 or 32 bits. Restart your pc and all should work again.

Sorry, I didn't have a SuSE system right near by me and I must remind me on this settings / configuration steps.

I don't know if one of this tools "sax" or "sax2" is available on your SuSE system (on older version you can configure your x server with one of this tools).

Maybe you can read something in the section of trouble-shooting of your manual (book, pdf, whatever).

If this doesn't work, please boot from the first medium (install CD or DVD) and choose the "repair current system". I hope this option is still available.

It should work ! If not then please inform me. It tested it only with an older version of Cedega. Recent versions are only available if you pay for cedega <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />

Sorry for your inconvenience, benjamin <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />

The easiest way is to reinstall your SuSE system because I have not the faintest idea what exactly the problem is <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />

but when something goes wrong <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/puppyeyes.gif" alt="" /> , i won't be very happy i guess <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/silly.gif" alt="" />

WOOOOW!!!!
i think i just got a revelation <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/silly.gif" alt="" />

DD is actually installing on my linux-box!!
5% already <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

the specs are:
2.4 Intel
768Mb DDR RAM
ASUS mobo (don't know wich)

[DD is asking to put cd2 in cd-rom/ 34% but had some troubles opening my drive (did an eject <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> cmd]

the drive is an liteonit (i don't know the number
<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shame.gif" alt="" /> )

and that's about it <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/freak.gif" alt="" />

he's at 67% and asking for third cd <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

forgot to say that i have SuSE 9.3 <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" />

and the fun part now is : it does not want to play! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" />

wine says me: unload the debugger and try again.
wineX says nothing, but shows me the startup screen for about a minute and then exits <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/sad.gif" alt="" />

Benjamin, this are great news !

I tried it many times but I can't installed DD directly from the CD's <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" /> I don't know what the people from SuSE / Novell did that it now works. Or maybe the installation doen't work on my system because a have the old German version ?

Ok, now to your problem:

Quote

wine says me: unload the debugger and try again.

In normal cases this comes from the copy protection.

You should try to install the latest patch for <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> (backup your whole dd-directory because it is easier to restore it as to reinstall it) !

Quote

wineX says nothing, but shows me the startup screen for about a minute and then exits

Do you have mounted the cd-drive with the game cd inside ?

So as I know is the support for copy protection in WineX / Cedega a lot better than in Wine but without any error message it is the problem hard to discover <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />

I updated it, and wine is not telling me anymore to disable the debugger, but it keeps asking "please put cdrom 3 in the cd-rom drive"
my guess is that i have to change the mount point, because i took my cd-rom reader out.
How do i do that?

and cedega keeps doing the same <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/puppyeyes.gif" alt="" />

Strange ... ok, so far as I remember me correctly used SuSE a tool which is called "automounter" and a few other tools / programs which depend on the automounter. The automounter make the life for you easier. automatically mounting of cd's, usb-sticks, dvd after you put them into your pc drive or usb slot.

This is a problem for wine or better for the drive letters for the faked windows system.

First a question: How many cd/dvd reader/burner did you have into your pc ?

Ok, try we it slowly <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

Please put the output of this two commands here (please without the quotes):
Code
"ls -la ~/.wine/dosdevices" (please as this user which is running wine)

and
Code
"ls -la /dev/cdroms/" (please do this as user root / system administrator)

If it possible then please put the output of this command
Code
"cat /etc/fstab" (please do this as user root / system administrator)

If you want and you didn't know them, can I explain you the above commands.

Thank you !

Ok, now the explanation of the commands:

"ls -la <path>"

"ls" stands for "list directory contents"

the option "-la" of the commands is a shorted version from "-l -a" whereas "-l" means long and "-a" means all

or the whole comand stand for "list all the content of the directory <path> in a long version"

<path> is a wildcard for the two directory path which you used whereas

the "~" in "~/.wine/dosdevice" the meaning had: use the home directory of the current user

cat <file>

"cat" stands for "concatenate files and print on the standard output"

You used only one file (/etc/fstab) and this file is displayed in your console application.

The file "fstab" in the /etc directory contains all the mount points of your well known drives (hard disc, floppy, dvd, cd burner, ...)

Back to the divinity will not run on linux problem:

So far as i understand dutch means the message

Quote

dD5E0AAE5:/home/alucard # ls -la /dev/cdroms/
/bin/ls: /dev/cdroms/: Onbekend bestand of map

that this directory doesn't exists, but this is not a problem.

Can you try out this: Access the third <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> CD (let you show the content of the CD) and then start <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> with wine ? Does the "Please Insert CD 3" message again ?

It still shows me the same message <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />

but i hear my floppy drive searching <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />
someone told me to uninstall wineX and then reinstall it for the drives to be recognized correctly. Should i <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/question.gif" alt="" />

I think i found the problem...
but i don't know how to solve it <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shame.gif" alt="" />

I noticed that, when i insert a cd, linux makes an extra map in my /media
like: /media/LARIAN_DIV3
instead of /media/cdrecorder/LARIAN_DIV3

do you know how to change that? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/suspicion.gif" alt="" />

Do you have wine and winex installed ? Then it is better to deinstall wine and winex and reinstall wine ! After this, try it again.

If this doesn't worked then iI have an other idee !

As far as i know this would not help you because all the configuration data will not be deleted if you remove winex (or wine). You must remove this configuration data seperatly. For WineX i must guess where are the configuration data is located in your home directory ... maybe ".transgaming", ".cedega" or ".winex" .. but don't remove it, rename it. If something doesn't worked, you can restore it easily.

and it is Cedega 4.3.1 <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />
but it is not included in SuSE (wine is)

It think that is not possible for you <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" /> I used the "opensource" version of cedega which means that is this code which they (trangaming) must be published duet to licences determinations. Cedega aka WineX is a fork of the wine project which is a opensource project (now under the licences of LPGL). The "opensource" version of Cedega doesn't include optimized graphic routines or support for varius copyprotections system (only a few which also working in wine).

I will add sooner or later a notice to my guide that the support of winex / cedega will not be longer exists and removed after a while.

Sorry, I see no way how I can help you with Cedega execpt I get a recent Cedega version on a legal way <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />

Check this topic for details on how to play without the CD, at least for most of the time. The play CD will still be required at two points in the game, for cut scene videos on the CD.

Benjamin, can you please try my following suggestion before you try Raze's suggestion ?

Put the third cd (game cd) into your cd burner or cd drive.

I assume that you put the cd in your cd burner (because you wrote that you remove your cd reader).

Assuming your posted /etc/fstab please open a console an execute the following code as user root (you can try it also as normal user but I don't know if this works on your system)

Code
mount /media/cdrecorder

Now open an other console an change to the "~/.wine/dosdevices/" directory ("cd ~/.wine/dosdevices").

Assuming your posting about the content of the "~.wine/deosdevices" directory you must now the the content of the game cd if you execute this command

Code
ls -la "d:"

or you change to the "d:" directory and should see now the content of the game cd.

If you use the "/media/dvd" mount point into the mount-command above (if you use your dvd drive) then the content of the game cd should be in "e:".

If this doesn't work, try Raze's suggestion and told me please if one of this two suggestions work or not !

I think the is a package (rar file) missing. As i know from installing of the German version the is a rar file which will be installed if you run the first time the game or after installing the German retail version and install the first German patch you must insert the 3rd cd (game cd) and the rar-file "dat.rar" from the 3rd cd will installed from the game or the patch itself.

Did you have in the "Run" directory of our <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> installation a subdirectory which is called "dat" and this directory contains a lot ".dat" files ? For example: "props.dat", "skillprops.dat", "magic.cmp", a subdirectory called "monologues" ?

It is also be possible that an other rar file must be installed (from the game or manually) but I don't know which file <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />

A oggd way to solve this problem is: remove your <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> installation and install it in the manual way. This means that you must extract all the rar files manually as I described it. The start of the install-program is not necessary if you create the directories manual.

Maybe I should buy / get an English <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> version but where ? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif" alt="" />

If you inserted the 'startup logo 0' line at the end if the config.div file, you need to hit the enter key before saving the file. The game expects the last line to be blank, so will not recognize the change otherwise.

You may also need to have the latest patch installed in order for skipping the into videos to avoid checking the play CD on startup.

I think there is the problem: there are files missing which must be installed !

Can you look on the 3rd cd and is there a file "dat.rar" which contains some ".dat" files and maybe the subdirectory "monologues" ? If so the you must extract the "dat.rar" into the "dat" direcotory !

I have only one solution for you: remove your installed <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> installation and install <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> on the manual way (not tte hard disk installation procedure !). I don't know which files are missing <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />

i will let you know as soon as possible <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wave.gif" alt="" />

Because i have far too much problems with 9.3 <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shame.gif" alt="" />

but i forgot that i lended my cd's of SuSE, so i am bassicly stuck with it for a while.
That is not bad, so i will search a little further about my problem
Now i know what the problem is:
SuSE 9.3 automounts the cd's ;; no problem there
but instead of /media/cdrecorder it mounts at /media/GAME_NAME <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/exclamation.gif" alt="" />

I found some interesting links about it
=> suse linux forums <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />

That the game work is a good news ! That your keyboard doesn't worked is a bad news <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />

Did you get a error message on the console where you start <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> (at the beginning of the start) ?

Can you try it to run <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> in the window mode ?

Configuration hint:

Quote

One advantage is it if you run Divinity on GNU / Linux: you must not run it in a fullscreen resolution. Just uncomment and / or correct the following two options:

* "Desktop" = "800x600"
the resolution of your desktop should be the same like in Divinity
* "Managed" = "Y"

You will found options above in the [x11drv] section in your local wine config file.

What want you to know about the winex installation ?

How did you start wine and winex (exactly commands please) ?

Can you post your local wine config file ?

With wine I would use the "wineprefixcreate" command but for winex, I don't know <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" /> Is there no README file or a INSTALL file ?

WineX: Which maps did you mean ?

If you want to run <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> in a window mode, i wrote you, that you must uncomment this two lines and also change the desktop size to the size where you play <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" />

Bevor you change anything in the config file, please backup the file !

Code
[x11drv]
...
; Allow the window manager to manage created windows
"Managed" = "N"
; Use a desktop window of 640x480 for Wine
;"Desktop" = "1024x768"
...

must be changend to

Code
[x11drv]
...
; Allow the window manager to manage created windows
"Managed" = "Y"
; Use a desktop window of 800x600 for Wine
"Desktop" = "800x600"
...

The should the game and any application which you start with wine run in a window mode and in a desktop size of 800x600.

Please run <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> at leat once in a window mode and told me if you keyboard works or not ! Thank you.

I changed it, and it still played fullscreen.
But now i have a black line at my left side <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/suspicion.gif" alt="" /> , and the keyboard still doesn't
work. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />

and as for wineX, the maps i am talking about are the same as in the wine folder...

got an idea: what if i copy the maps from wine to wineX <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/question.gif" alt="" />

Benjamin, I think the problem is that you have Wine and WineX installed to the same time. As I did this a time ago I get more trouble as I expected. The problem was that if I installed WineX after Wine the result was that I couldn't run Wine anymore <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" /> After I removed Wine and WineX and reinstall Wine, Wine runs perfectly.

In the last time I installed WineX in a special way and used a special environment so that it comes not to a conflict between Wine and WineX.

I ahd only one solution for you: temoparly remove Wine and WineX, reinstall Wine and look if <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> works or not.

I have no other idea more how you can use Wine and WineX easily and at the same time <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />

done with snooping around <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

now i have just a "little" question:
Code
A few registry entries are still missing. The following code is in one file only - in my case "dd-linux.reg":

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CDV Software Entertainment AG\Divine Divinity]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CDV Software Entertainment AG\Divine Divinity\English]
"target folder"="C:\\games\\div"
"group folder"="C:\\WINDOWS\\Start Menu\\Programs\\Divine Divinity"
"language"="English"
"version"="1.0"

You have to change the entry "target folder" according to your install path before you continue. Double \ is correct and has to be like this, otherwise you'll encounter a false interpretation of the following code. The file you've created will then appear in the registry by:

regedit dd-linux.reg

I think you know where i got that from <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />
but where is that .reg file?
I don't see it in the DD folder <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />

You must create a file with this content ! You did not found this registry file anywhere ! After you create this file you must run the command

Code
regedit dd-linux.reg

"dd-linux.reg" is the file with the above content, which you create yourself ! But this registry entries are not really necessary (I did run the game without them a couple of times).
