I seem to have run out of lockpicks!
Fairly quickly too, considering I reached level 25 without picking a single lock...

I needed to join the thieves' guild, so I learned what I had to learn to meet the test. Then I found that picking other locks might help too, so I quickly scored five levels of lockpicking. Until then, I had sold most lockpicks to merchants. Apparently, they've managed to sell them to other customers again. I've been far and wide, and I have asked most people what they have to offer (traders or not). Not a guard in Verdistis has not been asked for lockpicks...

How to get them?
Is it possible that the game has "run out"?
They're simply very low on the probability for loot.
I waded through a horde of orcs, hoping one of them would drop a lockpick.
Now there aren't any orcs left in the large orc camp on the main map.
Still no lockpicks.

Does Heaven's Gift (get item for mana) have a chance of producing lockpicks?
If it does, how many levels do you need?
I'm a bit tired.
Finnigan sold only a carrot.

Have you tried the blackmarket guy in rivertown or Geoff the forgemaster?

Geoff doesn't sell any.

But all merchants running out together is weird. Try Blake (general merchandise) and Tingalf in the merchand area fi.
And you can even try other npc's - civilians. They carry mostly food/potions/little gold, but some carry other items every so often. And thieve npc's sometimes have'm too.
And ofcourse, you can wait till the next day and the merchants stock has "reloaded". It doesn't take long. Or you can go to sleep to make it pass even faster.

Heaven's gift only got me gold or potions when I tested the skill on differend levels. If I remember well.

Did you steal Finnigan's magic lockpicks from Commander Kratus' office? If not, talk to Finnigan in the Ducal inn cellar to get that quest. They are unbreakable (with the patch installed).
If you started the game after installing the patch you can steal them, give them to him to complete the quest, then buy them back. Since you said he has a poor inventory, it sounds like you started the game before installing the patch, in which case you need to keep the lockpicks and leave the quest unfinished, since you can not buy them back. In addition to lockpicking, they have another nice attribute... Spoiler : while in your inventory, they give you a +20 agility bonus (highlight the text to read).

If you broke the magic lockpicks in an unpatched game, installing the patch will place them back in Commander Kratus' table/desk. If you dropped them and they disappeared, or you gave them to Finnigan and can not buy them back, you can replace them;
Lost Items - guide and directory of inventory files (the first mention of Finnigan's lockpicks directs you to a different topic, but since the 1.34 patch, this is the best recovery procedure, described further down in the topic)

You could have gotten a couple levels of Lockpick by joining the thieves' guild (one by loosing a bet, and one from a choice of skills when you join).

Picking other locks will not help. The lock in the cellar only requires level 1 Lockpick. You were trying the door to the north, right, not the one to the east?

In addition to Tingalf (best choice if you have not had him arrested yet) and Blake in Ars Magicana, you can also try Mpenzak in Verdistis for Lockpicks.
If you quick save before running your mouse over an item/chest/merchant or hitting the alt key, you can identify the item or trade with the merchant, then quick load to get different stats or inventory. This can be done repeatedly to get the best stats or specific bonuses on an item (save after finding good candidates) or looking for specific items (such as spell books or charms) from merchants. Don't waste too much time with this, though, it really isn't necessary to get the best possible equipment.

I've tried those people, and I did the doors I was supposed to do on the guild quest -well, the first one. I had only one level. The three others in the same room were left unopened, and I reached another level of lockpick. (Would have been higher, had I not clicked the wrong speak option when gaining membership.)

This game was started without patch.
I'll look at lost items recovery. (And keep checking the merchants).
Thanks for the help!

I eventually started finding some again ( a few divinity days later ).
But then I accidentally won the game before I could really take advantage.
The last dungeon became a little boring, seeing as my equipment was better than anything I could find there, and I had an idea I might never get to spend what I found. I was right.

However. I saw a screenshot, I think, of an armour that gave +100-sized numbers to stats. That's insane, even with 5 charms of maximum power. What's that?

Oh, divertion of topic if I ever saw one.
And I did it.
And I did it to my own topic!

The +100 bonuses were most likely done with DAD's item editor (or maybe the one in this topic).
