In case of a blackout, the computer would turn off abruptly. When turned back on, the download manager should be able to pick up where it left off, as long as the server supports resuming interrupted downloads (most newer servers or those set up to handle a lot of downloads should support resuming).

In case of a brownout (temporary dip in power), the computer would likely reboot, after which the download manager might be able to automatically resume (if it has an option to start / resume downloads when the program starts, and it can be set to start with Windows).

It sounds like your recent blackout was preceded by a power surge, if damage was done. A sudden drop or loss of power is not good for computers, but generally doesn't do physical damage. A half decent surge protector would help with power surges, though would not do anything to help with brownouts like a more expensive UPS would.

When I bought my first computer I lived in an older house, in an area susceptible to brownouts, and occasional 5 or 10 minute blackouts. After loosing a few email and documents in progress due to the computer suddenly rebooting (though the auto save feature of my email program and word processor helped with this), I decided to get a UPS. After I got the thing home and plugged in, it was a good 4 or 5 months before another brownout occurred.

I see. Well you are right. The blackout did not do any physical damage to my computer and it was an opportunity to upgrade my system (that is why I am broke). The fridge on the other hand still hurts It is 30oC here and I do not have cold water or any food I think that I do not need an ups, but to move to another town... but I love Athens so much plus the apartment is mine and I do not want to sell it.

I will make a try to start downloading GW today. Who knows? You may see me on line (hope there are redheaded elves in GW) next weekend
Thanks so much Raze

the electric company should be sued for not maintaining the electrical flow within safe levels. Luc, if u find that the neighbours have the same problems due to the black or brown outs, write petition or something & demand the electric company to replace the damaged appliances.

they should at least inform people if they are going to do some maintenance which may cause blackout or brownout.

No, brownout is a correct word for power problems. However how they came to this term is something we probably will never be able to find out...

How I know? - SimCity Classic. You always got the message "brownouts" when facing energy problems.

I would guess the term brownout comes from the brownish red colour of lights at low voltage. Either that, or they needed a term to mean darker than light, but not as dark as black, and brownout flows off the tongue easier than greyout.

I see...
Well we use two words to discribe it. Poor translation "Fall voltage".
hm... I guess is very poor... it can not be translated. Somehow this thing anyway is more dangerous than a blackout. This thing "killed" my fridge.

thnx!
oh well the thing is that...i am dying to play sacred on-line, but, the problem is that i don't have a cd key...so i can't, and i can't buy it because here in Montenegro we don't have legitimate/original copies, i mean - no money no game...
so i was wondering is there someone here that has sacred but maybe, just maybe doesn't need the cd key to play it online, and is willing to help me out...
i would really love to see Sacred as it was meant with lots of players not just one...
it would be like helping a blind man cross the street...

and i think i will stick around, but first i have to see to get this "Divine Divinity" game, i like the screenshots and all those awards...

@ Womble: but the battles are so boring ... They're slow and auto-played, you just push a couple of buttons once in a while. And killing just the easiest of creeps takes an eternity, and you have to kill them all, otherwise they'll pile up and kill you.
