Since there is no cut scene, you are free to assume a fast inflow of lava that fries everyone, or a slow one that destroys the citadel but gives everyone time to evacuate. The first time you approach the forge room you can hear the blacksmith warn the imp not to tamper with the hatch or the citadel will flood, but I don't recall if he mentions how fast or destructive that would be.
