I always quicksaved before doing something that could get me arrested if caught. AFAIK at least one of the jails has a lockpick hidden under the pillow, or something. If you drop a teleporter stone in the jail before you get arrested, you can get out that way, and return to get your stuff.
Setup a home base somewhere, and distribute your excess stuff into chests. I kept separate chests for items to be sold, items to be repaired and then sold, charms and statuettes, food and spare potions, spare equipment and quest items, etc.
