Larian Studios Forums General Chat I just bought a PSP....nice piece of kit!

First thing I noticed is how beautiful it is. The large screen (4.3 inches) is crystal clear.

The pack is good vaule I think, for 250 euro you also get a 32 meg memory card (one of the conditions of me buying this was that it had to come with a card), also has headphones (with movie playback controls) a pouch and strap, cleaning cloth, and a demo disk with a software update that adds an internet browser to the machines system menu, and finally a charger.

I also read about problems with the square button being unresponsive due to its close proximity to the screen...well I haven't noticed anything wrong with it. It works just fine, though I did note that the button configs in one game I have, and the button config on the main system menus avoid using this button.

But a second game I have uses it a lot and it works perfect.

I never noticed it had an analog stick until I started using it...and it's very smooth.

I've yet to play back a movie on it, but there's a decent amount out already, and they can be rented from video stores like any other film.

Games I got with it are Untold Legends and Metal Gear Acid. Both appear quite excellent though I haven't play them too much. Untold Legends didn't receive great reviews but its a game almost identical to Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance on the PS2, and I like those kind of character building hack and slash games.

Well my portable gamestation is my notebook. If I had to choose I rather have a DS.

What is a dead pixel ?
How do you see it on the screen ?

A dead pixel is found in LCD screens. It is a pixel that is always black. So if the screen is completely white you would see that one pixel Black. unfortunately my TFT has a semi dead pixel. It only has green and blue but no red.

I had thought about the DS, and it would make sense as I have a GBA, but I wanted something that wasn't gimicky, like the dual screens (there's truely no need to have 2 screens is there?).

So the PSP with it's better power and graphics, movie playback etc. seemed like the better buy, better quality of games to come I'm sure.

No dead pixels...though mine is only brand new.

For normal, classic gaming - no. But there are and will be games specifically using this feature in various respects.

1. the touchpad (lower screen) to manoeuvre in the game in lieu of the buttons;
2. racing games, where one screen is your rear mirror view; in adventures, where you have the map or inventory on one screen, so that you don't have to leave the game screen;...

The touchscreen allows a totally different control feature/feeling - some like it, some don't. And some games are designed to display over both screens to give a larger screen surface/overview.

I hooked it to my PC with the usb cable at home and downloaded all the pics I took with my camera phone on to it.

I wont knock the DS...I think it'll have some great games on it, but I'm a little tired of the happy-go-lucky cartoon world of nintendo...somehow I doubt the Grand Theft Auto game coming out on PSP soon will be on the DS. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" />

Nintendo's kiddy image is highly overrated.

Yes and no - it has a valid basis, and was a key to Nintendo's success.

But N. is of course trying to expand the gamer base, in developping games for the community, which grows older. And of course not all games on N's platforms are 1st party Nintendo games. Other developpers do publish games on them also - Konami, THQ, EA, Capcom,Sega, to name just a few. And some of these do target quite different age groups.

But that was not the point - anybody may be happy with other consoles, it's their choice in accordance with their preferences. My point was, that it is astonishing what can be done with the two screen concept; touchpad, voice control and WLAN features on top - therefore I would not let the 'who needs two screens?' question stand uncommented.

I think it is worth evaluating - whatever the individual result ultimately may be.

Being reading some stuff about the DS, opinion seems divided on the idea of it being either a gimmick or a useful feature.

I asked the question about the screens, was there a point...and from what I read:

Touch screen sounds useful, and some games seem to use it well from what I read.

But I went for personal preference and the PS2 quality of games in a handheld, aimed at more mature audiences, is my gaming experience of choice.
