Inspired by Ice_rhyme's Latest movie u have seen!!! I've decided to go ahead and put a Latest Book You've Ever Read thread out there.

Don't really go into big details about the book if you can help it, as I am sure that is for another thread.
By the way, if anyone could put a link to that thread here for those who want to discuss books in detail, please do so.

d20 Modern Role-Playing Game and d20 Modern Menace Manual

Man, I'm a geek. Mind you, I find running modern adventures a lot easier than running fantasy. It all makes so much more sense! Unfortunately, the core rulebook is full of inconsistencies and contradictions. There have been many errata to clarify things. Unfortunately, some of the errata written by different people contradict each other as well... Problems aside, the book is comprehensive ad provides a great role-playing experience.

Now if you'll excuse me, Bobby has some mischievous gnolls to hunt...

currently reading One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest by .... eh... somebody. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" /> can't recall the name of the author BUT the book is entertaining.

recently finished the 3rd book of Ender series by Orson Scott Card. quite nice.

I'm currentlly rereading Weel of Time in English (gotten rouglly half Eye of the World, which is the first book). It's just great, well written, exellent story, detailed, everything! It's written by Robert Jordan by the way. If you like Fantasy it's a must, and if you don't, then at least try it, it's deffinentlly the best of the best there.

I quit jordan and the wheel of time after book 3...its meandering story and moaning miserable characters got too much for me!

Then someone on this forum told me about George RR Martins A Song of Ice and Fire series...

The last book I read was the latest book in that series, and the next one is out in October.

Truly, (IMO - and many others, including Jordan himself) the best fantasy series ever written. Period!

I highly recommend it.

Robin Hobb is good too.

The WoT-characters aren't that miserable! They're realistic IMO. And the world is being overrun by the dark one and it's been winter for ages! I know how miserable I get in wintertime <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/silly.gif" alt="" />! But then again, you can't argue about taste, can you <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />? I don't like Lord of the Rings by the way (find them too dry <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />. OK, Gandalf just died! Everybody's miserable! Aragon sais "Sorry, but I'm afraid we'll have to move on." Boromir sais: "But can't you see they're in pain due to the loss of their friend?". Aragon sais "If we don't move on now, we'll all die". And they move on. Sigh.)

There's some miserable characters in song of ice and fire too, but thankfully it's proper misery brought on by realistic problems (loved ones dying, bad injuries etc...) - not Jordans 'I want to go home cos I am cold and hungry! Boo-hoo.' <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />

Its fine in it's own way, wasn't for me, matter of taste and all that. Jordans PG 12's writing can't compare though in any way to the gritty realism of Martins mature characters, events, and problems - and the concept of Jordans semi-omnipotent 'Dark one' that everyone is afraid of is too Lord of the Rings-esque. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />

The 'evil' in ice and fire is the evil of men. With many shades of grey between. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

They beat the Eddings characters. They act as if they're out on a goddamn picknic!

I've just finished reading "The Ice House" from Minette Walters, it's a thriller about a dead body that has been found inside a ice house. Not bad, but I like the books from Nicci French better. Nicci French is a couple of two writers, and they have one of the best thriller stories that I ever read.

Now I have choosen for a more historical book, it's actually a youthbook, but written by one of my favorite writers, Paul Kustermans. The book is titled "De Langste Weg" (the longest way) and it's about the crusaders. I got this book from the writer himself, it was the second last piece that he was keeping for his grand children, but I got it for my hubbies birthday. Paul Kustermans is a very nice man. Now I am reading "The Rule of Four" by Ian Caldwell & Dustin Thomason but I can't tell if it is a good book yet. I just started it. Today I finished "The stranger beside me" by Ann Rule the English Edition (Mea See? I am reading English books and I hope I will learn the language a bit more <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />). It was about Ted Bundy a famous American serial killer. There are many monsters disguised in humans in this world... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />

It is a good book, especially if you like the story of people trying to decode a book ( Hypnerotomachia ) that is basically a great big code hidden here there, everywhere. It seems like the type of story you'd learn in an english class, but it is much better than that. I liked it. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" /> Did I mention the secret is worth killing for...?

As for myself, I've just read a new book called Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment . I loved it. It's the best book I've read in a long time, defanantly in my Top Ten, and the second novel that upon finishing it I said "I wanna read it again!".

It's by James Patterson, author of these detective novels that became popular movies: Along Came A Spider and Kiss The Girls both starring Morgan Freeman.

This is a book of modern fantasy and adventure about six children who have avian (bird) DNA grafted into theirs. So they have high reflexes, geneticly modified strength, and wings ! It starts with them having escaped the place where they were mutated, and are now being hunted down by Wolf-Men called Erasers.

For any fantasy-adventure lovers, you should read this book.

For anyone who has dreamt or wished to fly, it is a MUST READ.

Last 2 books i've read where:
- The Da Vinci code
- The Bernini Mysterie

both from Dan brown, both very good.. I liked Bernini a bit more actually. Now I'm readign some stephen king book with 4 stories. Right now i'm reading the Shawshank Redemption.

I'm gonna buy the Juvenalis Drama from Dan Brown as well in the near future

Deception Point More about science than art.
Digital Fortress More about science and government.

By the way, which King book are you reading? Four Past Midnight ?

I have no idea what the english title of the book is, I'm reading the dutch version, but it has the "shawshank redemption" in it. It is prolly the book you're talking about.

If it has the Shawshank Redemption then its not Four After Midnight . Maybe you could tell me what the title is in dutch. I'm pretty good at translating stuff.

Even if you don't know the language, there's usually a connection to others somewhere. Dutch is a Latin based language, right? I should see similarities with English, French, or Spanish if so (or with Latin itself).



I'm currently reading a book called Un homme et son péché (A Man and his Sin). I don't really enjoy it, but its for a class... Don't'cha just hate that? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />

That book from King is Different Seasons.

I am currently reading one of his books as well; On Writng. It's not a novel; it's about writing fiction, becoming a writer, etc. I like it and it's easy to read.
I'm also reading the Discours de la Méthode (...) by René Descartes for a course. It's very hard to read but interesting. A nice challenge.
Before these I read Not Guilty by Patricia McDonald; I think it would be placed in the thriller/suspense genre although it didn't thrill me much. Was not bad, but not great.


I'm searching for the ones I read from him but can't find nor remember the titles. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/suspicion.gif" alt="" /> I only read a couple of his works; it was great stories, but he seems to pass too fast, not deep enough through it; it had left me disappointed. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/puppyeyes.gif" alt="" />

I just finished Dead Man's Walk by Larry McMurty. It was the prequel to Lonesome Dove which eventually turned into a movie. It was darker than I thought it would be but it was still good.

I still prefer Louis L'Amour though.

I'm quite sure it's not one of them. I've read Kiss the Girls, but long ago; it's not one of those I think about. One was about two virgin teens, from different countries, being pregnant and the catholic Church investigating the cases, etc. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> On the book's cover was a dove and/or a hand... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif" alt="" />


I was glad to have went through the Discours de la Méthode... And I just learnt that I have to go through the Meditations by the same author; it's weird how an interesting challenge can turn into a chore-like task when obliged to be repeated... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />
At least, it was written in Latin so a translated version will probably be easier to read than one in a XVIIth century French. (I hope)
