I think you mean to say that the religious sect is the antagonist; and it's actually supposed to be a semi-secret branch of christiannity, that works for the Vatican. Of course, their portrayal in the book is different than the real group who found the DaVinci Code version of them amusing and exotic.

Robert Langdon, a symbologist that is brought into a police investigation because of some deep symbolism at the scene of the crime, is the protagonist. Yes, the story is very gripping and interesting.

Yet, I still think it's prequel, Angels And Deamons , was much better. I also enjoyed the other book by Dan Brown, Deception Point , more as well.
