Is it possible to have taken the Axe of Stone before receiving the Quest. I was able to go into the room beside the cave and clear out the cave way before I knew who the Dwarven Council member was. I have a feeling that I already took the Axe and sold it without knowing it's purpose. At any rate, now that I've received the quest, it's not in the room where it's supposed to be and I don't know where to go from here? Any suggestions?

Normally the entrance to the second level of the mine in the dwarven halls is sealed until you have the quest to recover the axe of stone. Did you maybe just clear the first level of the mine previously, and not notice the cave-in covering the entrance?

Did you hit the alt key in the room with the alter where the axe is suppose to be, to try to help find it?

If you did manage to get in early, or found the axe and gave it to the dwarven council member rather than the king, you can get a replacement;
