I installed DD after a long hiatus. Used to work fine on my old computer. But now it crashes, particulairly after I move through doors.

Could also be a problem with my soundcard, although its the same soundcard that was in my old computer and those games never crashed. The game sound does stutter occaisionally and it does suffer from "white noise" from time to time. Also the music sometimes hangs. I already tried to turn off sould acceleration in DirectX and it doesn't help much.

And yes, I did update my drivers.

My specs:
Intel 2.8 ghz
500 ram
Soundblaster Live!
ATI Radeon pro 9700
DirectX 9.0c
Windows XP sp1

Any suggestions would be welcome. I'd really like to be able to play DD again.

A couple people have run into this problem before, but lowering the sound acceleration a notch usually helped.

Are you shutting down all non-essential programs (especially anti-virus) before starting the game?

Were you rounding off your amount of RAM? It should be 512; if it really is 500, that implies there is onboard video enabled on your motherboard, which is using 12MB. In that case, if you are not using it (ie for a third monitor), you should disable onboard video in your BIOS (generally you hit the escape or F1 key after the computer starts up but before Windows starts to load - there should be a message displayed on screen to that effect, or you can check your motherboard manual).

Sorry, was a typo, meant 512 ram.

I can play the game but it does crash from time to time. Sometimes within 5 minutes, other times I can play the game for like an hour and it stays working.
I'm pretty sure its the soundcard drivers conflicting with directx and XP or something like that.

If anyone has suggestions I'd like to hear it, but I'm afraid I'll just have to live with the problems.

If the crashes seem to happen more frequently when crossing through doorways, try lowering (or even disabling) hardware sound acceleration. This will be slightly different in the French version of Windows, but click Start | Run, type in dxdiag and hit Enter, then switch to the sound tab to get to the hardware sound acceleration option.

Did you install any programs or update any drivers, etc about the time the game started crashing?

Try deleting all of the files in the '..\Divine Divinity\Run\Dynamic' folder. Since you have the patch installed, if you reset the configuration files at least once after a crash when prompted, the dynamic folder should already have been cleared.
This folder is used as a cache for the game. Files are created / copied there from the save game folder when you load, and written / copied from that folder when you save a game. The files will be re-created as required the next time you start Divinity. If there was a corrupt file in that folder, deleting the files should fix the problem.

Try backing up your saved games, just in case, and doing a clean reinstall of the game and patch. See the Troubleshooting Tips topic for details.
