The players are playing against the board itself, trying to survive and stop the great old one (crazy god creature) from rising.
There's a lot of variation to it, and its even better with the expansion (Dunwich Horror) as that changes some rules slightly and makes the game more interesting.
Long game too, take about 3 hours to play on average. And can even be played solo!
Great too if you have an interest in Lovecraft as its brimming with references and great artwork.
