I met Taxlehix, an imp merchant, in Act I, the Citadel Maze area. He offers me the four Thieving skills (Pickpocket, Lockpick, Sneak, Poison) for $900 each. I already have these skill paths enabled, and my DK and hero both have two points in Poison/Weapon Damage and one point in Poison/Extra Duration.

Tax apparently offers to teach the skills up to level ten. But when I click on Poison I lose $900 and gain nothing. For both of my characters, the damage skill remains at level 2 and the duration at level 1.

I tried putting a skill point into Sneak and selecting that skill from Tax’s list, but again I lose $900 without an increase in the skill level.

I'm playing version 1.47.

Is this a bug? What’s happening? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/suspicion.gif" alt="" />

During character creation, if you choose the survivor skill path for at least one of your main characters, you will start off with the survivor thieving skills available to level 5. For example, you could put up to 5 skill points into Poison, Weapon Damage. Learning these skills from Tax will raise that maximum level to 10, but does not otherwise help; you still need to invest your own skill points to improve your existing skills or create new ones.

You will next meet Tax near the beginning of act 2, so if you don't think you will need to put more than 5 skill points into one of these skills during act 1, you can put off learning them until later, if you wish.

That sounds a bit obscure. Not you, Raze. I mean the game should be clearer.

If I understand you, I can now raise my thieving skills to level five. But for each $900 I give to Tax, I will be able to raise one of the skills to ten (using my own skill points).

I do think the actual design is better than the way what I thought it was supposed to be. If it was the way I thought, I could have spent $900 x 8 and raised my DK's or hero's poison Weapon Damage skill from two to ten. That would have been fairly inexpensive, and it would have unbalanced the game greatly on the side of easy.

Thank you for the clarification. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
