Larian Studios Forums Divine Divinity (English) Help/Tips/Tricks trying to get started -- not working

Hi... just got started with "Divine Divinity" and seem to be having difficulty at the very beginning of the game.
I am in the "basement" and pick up the sandals, potion, and the gold. When I go up the ladder, the next room is not visible to me at all and I cannot seem to interact with anything around me! The inventory, skills, etc. along the bottom are still active, but I'm stuck...
Is my problem
(a) I am having technical difficulties?
(b) I am just stupid and have forgotten something, like a torch?
or (c) I am just plain out of luck and I'm wasting my time?

Can someone PLEASE help me?

Disable Caps Lock. Enabling Caps Lock (or holding down the Shift key) allows you to move the screen focus away from your character (to see or be able to toss stuff further), but this can cause the focus not to be updated when you use stairs, etc.
