You can do what is called : Setting up base. You choose a town that you are currently working around, then leave one of your pyramids there. This way you can always come back to it whenever you want. Now, you can leave all your items on the ground. Bam! Instant base! I don't think items dissapere in Divine . Mine didn't. So you can keep your extra food, items you can't use yet, items that have certain skills on them that you want to use later (like lockpick ), etcetera.
You can even bring barrels into the town (first drag them in your inventory, then to the ground in town) and store your stuff in those if you like.
The ground in town for me was covered in spare stuff. I even brought chests I couldn't open yet there.

You can indeed buy or rent a house in Verdistis. It is one of the options you have as a storage facility. Items stored there will not disappear

Actually, the house in Verdistis is the only place you can loose items, if you take it over too early. When the quest is completed which allows you to rent or buy Malcom's house, the door is locked, the house is reset and items inside can be lost (I don't recall if it effects everything in the house, or just the cupboards). If, for some strange reason, you rent a room at the inn in Verdistis and leave anything in the chest, if your time runs out you will need to re-rent the room to get back in and retrieve your stuff.
I bought the house in Verdistis for the experience, but never used it (it is a little small and not that close to teleporter pad).

you don't need to rent or buy any house. just find an empty one or find a place outside somewhere you like and store you stuff there. none of the NPC will take your stuff. even your enemies.

Ars Magicana is a nice spot: good traders and you can buy weapons, armour, potions ...

I took over the Assassins guild. It would be great if you could do that with Stormfist Castle.

In the dwarven halls, you can use Poison Cloud to kill the 2 guards that take your stuff when visiting the king, thus allowing you free access without that hassle. If you cast Poison Cloud near, but not directly on and NPC, you may be able to kill them (some NPCs are protected from dying) without a drop in reputation.
I have not tried this, but you could kill the guards outside castle Stormfist, to see if that would give you easy access to the castle (save before attempting). Alternately, you can just loot everything (including the throne) while in the castle, and toss it out the front gate before you leave.

Don't forget to take Kirill's piano in the easter egg area. The piano looks very nice in the house.

Yes the easter egg area in the dark forest when you meet the Larian team in the prison. You can drag the piano in your inventory and keep it as you go back in Rivellon.

Nice! I've been there, but I guess I never noticed the piano.
