Is everyone old enough to dirve cars here?
Am I the only one who needs to take bus everywhere? (or at least to school)
Thank god the bus drivers are not crazy like the taxi drivers, (except a few of course)they drive in slow-motion, it's fun,(not that they drive in slow-motion) becaouse the drive so slow they won't come up some slippery hill road.

I have to go by bus (which is free ). If the weather allows it I go by bike. I know Barta takes the bus too (or other things, don't know about that (elephant ...)).

I don't know how to drive either. Well, I do know how to drive, but I don't have a license Why would I need that? I live in the city, take the bus or go by foot wherever I want, I don't have to worry about parkingspace, stress or bumping my car to a parkingpole

Unfortunately in South Africa (well in Johannesburg, pretoria, pietersburg to mention a few major cities) the public transport system is just not good enough and safe enough to use everyday...

I could not wait till my 18th birthday to get my licence, so that i could move as i please... without it in most places in johannesburg... you will be stranded.

Ok, schoolbuses run independently, so that is fine... but the general puclic can obviously not use that...
We do have metro buses too which are fine and generally safe, but they dont cover the whole city so for people who live in the nort/west of JHB, cant use them, while the south/east is well covered.
TAXI's.... welll need i say more..... NAHHHH wont take them anywhere....

I would say, unless you live in Cape town or bloemfontein, you NEED a lisence.... otherwise you stuffed....

So yea... had my drivers since my senior school year (but been able to drive since i was 10!!!!! - i grew up on a farm

@ Janggut
I think in Sweden they are allowed to walk around, since that country is big enough

In Sa they are allowed to walk around.... on any FARM... villages, towns and cities are free of wildlife (other than in zoos).

For that matter there are HUGE debates over if the national game reservation agencies will allow the hunting (and killing) of certain elephant families in reserves, because of overpopulation...

Personally i think its a good idea... it will be very well controled and will bring extra funds to protect our wildlife. Other people have a HUGE problem with that, since you cant jusk kill one... you have to kill the whole family, otherwise they go "crazy" and often the family will kill the young if one of the parents die... the remaining parent becomes very agressive and destructive. So its down to an issue of killing 3-6 elephants at a time

on the other side... if you dont do it.... elephants will have this effect on the environment within 10 years....

Before

After
or
even worse

just to maintain a healthy environment full of elephants, i recon its wise to sacrifice 1000 in order to maintain 20 000.

they cute and very affectionate animals... and also the land mammal with the smallest eyes in comparison to the size of their bodies.

Completely wrong.
In France there are a lot of elephants.
In the great cities like Paris, there are too much cars and too much pollution.
So it's better for the health of the people to ride an elephant than to drive a car.
I don't have my private elephant because it is really expensive but i am sparing money and i will buy one very soon.
I will be very happy to have a new pet.

True. If killing is wrong, letting those 1000 live so all 21000 die is even more wrong (since that is indirectlly killing 21000).

Ephraim Kishon once wrote an excellent satire about elephants with the title "Elephantiasis".

well i'm glad that i'm wrong as it shows that french people respect animal rights & to have elephants as rides instead of cars or anything that emit smoke, it will be great.

Barta, i really hope u will have that elephant pet soon.

@ Stone -> but smallish asian elephants are cute too!
