Too late to help now, but the latest
patch disables saving when you are dead. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/sad.gif" alt="" />
It would be a good idea to save the game under a new name before (or after) major quests, good equipment finds, etc. and not just rely on quick saves.
