If you can find or buy a spider statuette, it will allow you to do the army quests fairly easily. Orcs are friendly towards spiders, and you will only need to transform back to a human briefly to place the explosives.
Instead of heading pretty much straight to the supply train, you could backtrack north a bit, where there are weaker opponents, then head east. After forming a path, you can slowly work your way south by clearing successive east/west strips of land. That way you can take out the weaker opponents first and would not get completely surrounded (the only live orcs would be to the south); if you attract any groups, you will have room to withdraw, so they spread out a bit chasing you, and then turn to fight again (assuming a couple spin attacks don't take care of the weaker orcs).
There is no time limit on the quest, so you can also wait until you level up or get better equipment.
If you have cleared the area around Aleroth and explored the farmlands and east of there, the next easiest area would probably be to the north east. After that, the north west area around the cursed abbey should be doable; the undead there are slow (easier to take out from a distance) and do poison damage (if you see any Spell Shield books for sale, buy them - poison damage comes off the shield and you do not jerk around). As you go south, the orcs (SE) and trolls (SW) start getting tougher.

As of the latest
patch, True Shot and the damage portion of Crossbow Expertise are broke. Some re-release versions of the game may already be updated to the latest 1.0034A version, as shown in the bottom right corner of the main menu, so would not need to be patched.
