Ok I get the game today that I have been patiently waiting for. I am playing Beyond Divinity (English Version) and since it is 2006 I went and also downloaded the update patch and installed it as well. I installed both the game and the patch and then restarted my system to ensure the settings took effect. So i start the game up and it loads the main screen which mind you i loaded under the 640x480 resolution hoping to keep some memory handy in the off chance i might need it.

I get to the screen where your presented with your charachter and are able to edit him/her for the first time and as soon as I move my mouse the game freezes up on me. the sound is still playing in the background but I cant play or move the mouse or anything and I am forced to manually restart my pc which i know is not good.

I really want to play this game so any help here will be greatly appreciated. here are my system specs in case they might help. you can also email me any info you might have if that is easier for you at psgnick@hotmail.com

The game itself has enough space for temporary files, too ?

I'm assuming so. I am actually surfing the net and reading posts in the tech forum now hoping to find some info on what to do.

Did you check for updated video drivers? The manufacturer may have an update even if the Windows Update site does not.

A couple of topics with similar issues are below, which you can check for suggestions. There are some topics with your exact problem, as well, which you can search for.

yet another "Game simply won't start!"-thread and BattleFields N00b ?

Ok good news is I figured out the problem. Bad news is even though I know how to fix it I still can't play the game unless i win the lotto and get rich or unless someone has one laying around...

I have a 32 mb video card and the game requires a 64 mb video card for even the minimum system requirements.

so unless one of you great generous people out there have a 64 mb video graphics card out there lying around you would care to send me im forever doomed to NOT play Beyond Divinity and I wasted my money sniff sniff

But I am playing with 32mb video card memory, with a resolution of 1024 at 77 frames per second.

Motherboard: A7N8X-VM/400

Details on graphics card: Integrated GeForce4 MX GPU

Hail Divinity!

Larian is fairly conservative when setting the minimum system requirements; you may be able to get the game running ok on lesser systems, though obviously not as well.

Since the amount of video memory itself is not the problem, the issue may be with the specification that the video card be at least DirectX 8.1 and compatible with DirectX 9 drivers.

If you run dxdiag (click Start | Run, type in dxdiag and hit Enter), does it report any problems? There are a couple of tests under the Display tab.

If it does come to replacing your current video card, you should be able to find something more than adequate in the US$30-50 range. I wouldn't necessarily upgrade just for one game, unless you are looking for an excuse (which it doesn't sound like). However, since you started off at 640x480 in case you ran low on memory, I'm guessing that is from habit and an upgrade would help games in general.

You might also want to check your motherboard manual for the type of RAM it uses and the available slots. Windows XP takes up a good chunk of your 256MB just loading, so another 256 or 512MB RAM should give a noticeable improvement in games and other memory intensive programs. More RAM would probably be the most effective upgrade, though it would be less likely than a new video card to help get BD running.

Can't be, I've played it with 32 MB as well. Although in very low resolutions.

Thanks for the continuing help guys im now looking into purchasing more ram as it seems to be cheaper where I am than buying a a video card. on the plus side I spoke with my father (who lives in NY while i live here in KY) and he says he may have a 64 mb video card laying around and will send it to me if he finds it.

[color:"orange"]found the updated drivers for my video card[/color]

I will not say I told you so, but....

Anyway, I'd still look at adding some RAM. Another 256MB should help across the board performance; with 512MB added, only the more memory intensive programs would perform noticeably better than with just an extra 256MB.

Okay, Raze, for XP it's true. I've still got Win98SE, and it's working fine with my over 300 MB RAM ... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

Yes, Windows 98 only requires half the RAM XP does (maybe less). I'm also still running 98SE, and it was fine with 256MB. Upgrading to 512MB (boxing day special on RAM a few years ago) helped with multi-tasking, as well as games and other memory intensive programs (the difference was noticeable, but not dramatic).
