Yes, Windows 98 only requires half the RAM XP does (maybe less). I'm also still running 98SE, and it was fine with 256MB. Upgrading to 512MB (boxing day special on RAM a few years ago) helped with multi-tasking, as well as games and other memory intensive programs (the difference was noticeable, but not dramatic).
