When the chest opens, is there anything of value in it? You can not take anything with the game paused, but at least you can see what is there. I generally didn't get much (ie a potion and couple pieces of gold).
Did you install the
patch before starting your current game? I just re-tried having one character exit the hut to teleport both away from the trap (in a game started before the latest patch), and it worked fine. I doubt the patch is part of the problem, though.
