You shouldn't have a problem. Install the patch: it will save you a lot of trouble with potential issues <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wave.gif" alt="" />

I am in blood
Stepp'd in so far, that, should I wade no more,
Returning were as tedious as go o'er.

A Macbeth said, your saves will continue to work fine. I started my first game in the unpatched version, and installed the hotfix and latest patch during that game.

Some story fixes and changes in the patch only apply to new games (for example, Finnigan in the cellar of the Ducal inn carries a much better selection of stuff for sale in games started after the patch is installed), but your current game will benefit from the technical fixes, extra quicksave slot, etc.

Have you entered the catacombs yet? If you explore (and loot) around Aleroth you should not have too many problems in the catacombs. If you leave Aleroth, don't go too far south at low character levels, as the orcs start to get tougher.

A bow and hit-and-run tactics can help if you are running into problems. From level 1 you can actually use this to go up 3 levels by killing the zombie Jake twice; you can find Jake in the graveyard (<span class='standouttext'>Spoiler : </span><span class='spoiler'>move the flowers from his wife's grave to his</span> : highlight the text to read) and in the cellar of one of the houses.
Meteorstrike is even more effective (the male wizard starts off with this, IIRC) since it can be cast very quickly and has a stunning effect, but requires mana.
