How old are you in the story? We can't have you to much advanced over us <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />. Why don't you tell us where you think you should be for your characters age? You may even be knowledgeable enough to say something like "Hey, I've seen that skill before - do you know how...."
