To name an actual level is difficult, but you should be quite strong. Try though anyway, if it doesn't work out just come back later. Still, as a mage, you could undertake some hit and runs. The creatures there provide you with loads of experience. I've always thought it an excellent place to level up a bit.

If you've gone through the majority of Rivertown and Verdistis, you shouldn't have any problems with the Dark Forest. If the southern edge of Rivertown was giving you trouble (orcs and trolls), you may want to hold off until you are a little stronger.

If you make periodic named saves in addition to quicksaves, they may be less likely to get over-written. Also, each save is a separate subfolder in the '..\Divine Divinity\Run\savegames' folder, so it is relatively easy to zip or move saves to another location, to free up space or for backup.

In Windows XP you can zip a file or folder by right clicking on it in Windows Explorer and selecting 'Send To | Compressed Folder'. Other version of Windows, or to get more features in XP, require a separate program (freeware archive managers).
