I'm getting ready for a new game. I've played Oblivion to my heart's content, but it's time to move on. I hated MW because all I did when I tried it was stumble around lost in the dark and get killed by crabs. No fun at all.
I like combat, but I couldn't even kill a crab.
I don't like getting lost, or wandering about.
But now that I have played and enjoyed Oblivion will I enjoy MW?

"Will I still hate Morrowind?" you ask.

I enjoyed Morrowind - and it's expansions - tremendously the first time around. This will probably colour my view when I say No and No again.

The thing is, Oblivion is a faster and player-friendlier game: the level scaling makes sure you almost never face creatures you can't beat, fast travel lets you go anywhere, well, fast, and the arrows on your map indicating exactely where you have to be make sure you never get stuck or can't find a way out.

It's up to you whether you like or dislike these features. Morrowind didn't have them which makes some people like the game more and vice versa. I love Oblivion, but it has not given me the exact same feeling of being able to explore a huge world that is completely unknown to me.

Oblivion is more user friendly, but Morrowind is a much vaster and truer RPG experience. If I were you, I'd really give it another shot. It has it's weaknesses, but it's strengths far outshine these (the same goes for Oblivion).

Also, if you were annoyed when you got killed by mudcrabs, I think you may have been going the wrong way about it, no offence. If you like combat, play as a Nord, Orc or Redguard, choose strength and endurance, and blade, axe or blunt. Level one fighter characters that fit this description should have no problem whatsoever knocking down crabs. Trust me.

Should you decide to try again, feel free to ask for advice concerning character creation. I played Morrowind a lot, again and again, especially as a melee-heavy-armour-type-of-character, so I think I can give you some valuable pointers.

Reconsider Morrowind. It's worth it

I enjoyed Morrowind and it expansion, but i used cheats. The game was totaly unbalanced and that was why i liked it. i also used the console commands to instanly transport me to locations, and in my opinion: The only real bad thing about Morrowind was that you needed to switch between magic and weapon attack mode. life's hard for a battlemage in Morrowind, also combat in Oblivion is better, as you really do everything yourself, not that calcuated stuff of blocking and maybe hitting your enemy.

If they would have Werewolfs in Oblivion, it would be the best game i ever played, until then, Warcraft 3 stays my favorite.

if you would like to 'fast travel' in Morrowind, the coc "name of the location" command can come in pretty usefull, it is the cheat/command i used most.

Hm Cleg I played Morrowind twice and honestly the only thing I hated was that a lot of it was dark and hard to see, but with my favourite plug ins it was worth it :
 • EM_Angelina.esp
 • EM_G_Adamantium.esp
 • FemmDominaArmor.esp
 • master_index.esp
 • TheBlackLodge.esp

Mostly available from ElricMportal
And you will have a ton of fun, without cheating.

But it is nice to have your own house (TheBlackLodge.esp) and since I play mainly females (I just like the look of them ), the domina armor does wonders for the hips and the angelina face is pretty nice to look at too

Oh and the Master Index just helps in travelling around it is a Rapid Access Transport System (Sheesh that reminds me of Eye of the Beholder )later in the game as in the beginning you can get easily around by Stilt ride, boat or Mage Portal, the Index comes in Handy once you get about 1/2 to 3/4 into the game and you keep going from billy to jack

The reason I got killed by mudcrabs if I remember correctly was 1. I couldn't see anything. 2. I couldn't hit anything.

That sounds good.

What about the expansions?

Well, I installed Bloodmoon, just to be able to become a werewolf. very usefull, for those hard to beat enemy's
I never played the quests of Tribunal (maybe i should), nor did i use any of it's content exept for the DB armor, so i don't know or that one's worth it.

Both expansions are great, especially Bloodmoon.

OK. I bought the game and Bloodmoon and Tribunal are included.
I changed the gamma settings so it is not so dark.
This time I found that damn cave I got lost in the dark looking for the first time, and it turned out to be right in town--almost. Easy fights inside.

The graphics are primitive of course, but I can overlook that.

What do I do with moon sugar and skooma, besides dropping it on the floor before I can barter with a merchant?

Should I buy armor and weapons or wait to get drops off of kills and save my money for something else?

I only installed MW. Should Iinstall the expansions now or wait until I beat the game?

I freed 3 slaves and they just stand around. Odd.

hmm for questions about Morrowind et al, best is Dave Humphreys Unofficial Elder Scroll Pages you can find a link on the top of the page that will take you to his new elder scrolls wiki.

In regards to Skooma ... only if you are playing a outside of the law character, else don't even go near it the slaves have a separate Semi Quest going once you have saved them all (in all of Morrowind ) well either play the game or check out the answers on Dave's Page, he's been around since Daggerfall days and I recall playing some PBEM games with him ... he knows his stuff in regards to Bethesda, I am even likely to say aside from Bethesda them self he would be the next most knowledgeable <bluddy heck is that a word?> person in regards to The Scrolls

I could not *stand* Morrowind.

I don't think I would ever enjoy it.

I liked Oblivion for like...2 months.

And then I realized it was a very dumbed-down, uncreative, hand-holding RPG experience: Every non-storyline quest basically involved going into a dungeon and killing someone, or going into a dungeon to find the lamp of metrosexuality or some such.

I guess after playing Arena and Daggerfall I had high expectation for MW and OB and was let down by both.

The only reason I played Oblivion for as long as I did was because I used several mods, usually the "overhaul" ones that changed almost everything.

Try some more quests, cause there are a lot of different types of quests in the game. If you would play fightersguild and stuff like that, sure you need to go in a dungeon and kill someone, but the quests you get from citizens and people like that are different.

Indeed. Sometimes a quest felt repetitive, but not often.

Some of the quests in Oblivion are indeed "different." Paranoia is one example of a unique sort of quest.

As to Morrowind.
I like it a whole lot better than the first time I tried it. I do have several gripes though.
1. The UI (user interface) is horrid--especially the inventory.
2. Sometimes the hotkeys and controls don't work--very annoying. And switching between spell casting and weapons is far too awkward. A battlemage is impractical.
3. The size and complexity is too overwhelming at times--though I suspect once I get to know the game better that will resolve.

That's sort of the brilliance. Overwhelming sure, but once you get the hang of it you just appreciate the feeling of limitlessness all the more.
