Urgh. I had enough trouble with Office XP. I'm not one to modify my computer very often. I had the machine designed and built. Over the last five years, it's had:
- A memory upgrade:
256Mb to 1Gb. - A CD burner:
This was in addition to the DVD drive. I didn't care so much about this and never really used it. My girlfriend wanted it. - A new video card:
This was a bit of an experience. The first one was physically faulty. The second one required extra power to run the fan, more than my machine could provide. The third one worked without problem.
So it's not an unreasonable list. Recently I did need the CD burner to make copies of wedding photos. However, it was only making a set of coasters. I suddenly remebered the issue I had with the second video card. I tried unplugging my DVD drive. Hooray! There was now enough power and I could burn CDs again.
All was good, until I tried to use Microsoft Office XP. "Your system has changed significantly and I need to reregister office before you can work on your existing documents." It had as much functionality as Adobe Reader. Worse than that, somewhere in the four houses I've lived in the past five years, I lost my Windows and Office CDs. Now Office won't go.
I finally fixed the problem. My boss lent me his copy of Office XP and told me to use
Magic Jellybean to get my old CD-key. So I now have a copy of the CD and my original CD key and a working Office XP.
As much as I support and appreciate copy protection, grrr....
