When I heard the first rumours of windows Longhorn I was ecstatic finally a new M$ OS . But then the news articles of cuts being made to get the product done on time started to come in.

No big deal at least they will have a improved security policy. But the last articles really left a bad taste.

It seems that the licence is modified. Now the software packet you buy in the store (that is way more than a OEM license ) is only good for 1 pc. What is the difference with XP you wonder. XP license says only one pc at the same time. So you can upgrade or replace your pc and still use your XP license if you make sure the old pc is formatted (no XP on it). With vista this would be impossible. I am a computer enthusiast and I upgrade some pc parts every 3 moths. So if Vista detects a hardware change and decides it is a new pc good buy license.

So why spend 200$++ on a license while a OEM license is 20%-50% cheaper?

Vista doesn't care about PC-enthusiast

//If only MAC OS worked on every PC
///Hopes MAC OS for every PC is released at the same time as vista if there is a god

That really sucks! I regularly upgrade my PC a lot, too. Looks like Vista is a very bad plan.

During my training, I worked in a small company (*very* small !) where PCs were worked with *very* frequently. Just to test out network cards, for example, and formatting harddrives, not to mention installing all kinds of hardware that had to looked into because it seemed perform a "strange behaviour" (we had top find out whether the hardware was faulty or not).

I often wonder how they might cope with xp, that needs to be activated after every bigger modification.

I still don't understand it.

The elders of Chelm noticed that somebody was stealing from the poorbox. At a loss for how to handle the situation, the town elders finally decided to put the poorbox up near the ceiling where thieves could not reach it. After some time passed they realized their error. Nobody could reach the box to make donations. They conferred on the matter and decided to place a ladder to the poorbox so that people could now make donations.

Maybe if enough people complain, MS will change their plans--or is that just wishful thinking?

Urgh. I had enough trouble with Office XP. I'm not one to modify my computer very often. I had the machine designed and built. Over the last five years, it's had:
  • A memory upgrade:
    256Mb to 1Gb.
  • A CD burner:
This was in addition to the DVD drive. I didn't care so much about this and never really used it. My girlfriend wanted it.
  • A new video card:
This was a bit of an experience. The first one was physically faulty. The second one required extra power to run the fan, more than my machine could provide. The third one worked without problem.

So it's not an unreasonable list. Recently I did need the CD burner to make copies of wedding photos. However, it was only making a set of coasters. I suddenly remebered the issue I had with the second video card. I tried unplugging my DVD drive. Hooray! There was now enough power and I could burn CDs again.

All was good, until I tried to use Microsoft Office XP. "Your system has changed significantly and I need to reregister office before you can work on your existing documents." It had as much functionality as Adobe Reader. Worse than that, somewhere in the four houses I've lived in the past five years, I lost my Windows and Office CDs. Now Office won't go.

I finally fixed the problem. My boss lent me his copy of Office XP and told me to use Magic Jellybean to get my old CD-key. So I now have a copy of the CD and my original CD key and a working Office XP.

As much as I support and appreciate copy protection, grrr....

Since you can't transfer a copy of Windows that comes with a new PC anyway, less than 10 percent of all Windows licenses are transferable at all. And of those, only a tiny percentage of users have ever tried to even transfer a Windows license once. The only people that really need to do this regularly are hardcore PC enthusiasts who change their machine configurations regularly...And if you do actually have a catastrophic PC failure, you'll be able to transfer your license just as before. The process, as it turns out, hasn't changed at all. "The escalation process is exactly the same in Vista," Boettcher told me. "You have to call support. It just wasn't clear in Windows XP.

But it seems M$ won't give you a hard time if you just call there support line. . Still it is a hassle. lucky for me my MB or HD's are not replaced much (mb change every in 2-3 years).

Since when is copy protection punishing the legal buyers :'( .

Ever thought about the meaning of ubuntu????

The word comes from the Zulu and Xhoza languages.

A rough translation in English would be "humanity towards others"

and "the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity."

(and yea i also have that running on my file server)

Lady Rain lets out a sigh of relief & says, "thank the heavens for Microsoft!"

yea, in a way it is true that techies all over do have steady jobs thanks to Microsoft's buggy business.

oh, EK, when u mean StarOffice, u mean the latest version (6 above) which is paid or u are still using the old one (5.2) which is free? OpenOffice while lacks the templates that StarOffice has, performs better.

I'm still using the old free one, Jang.

I intend to check out Open Office as soon as I get my new machine

Both have the same source as a basis: StarOffice (a German product, originally ! ) is the commercial variant, whereas OpenOffice is the Open variant.

The commercial variant ships with some things the open variant doesn't have, like a spell checker and a thesaurus, as far as I know.

I have both, because an older version of StarOffice once was on a magazine's CD-ROM.

btw, im on vista RC1 right now. Its pretty good but a really sjitty thing is if you wanna remove or install something, you get 2 popups first becouse it can be unsafe and sjit if only my old illegal xp still worked

I wouldn't say that.

However, I'm still fine with my legal Win98SE, although it gets old a bit.

But : I've installed an - illegal or not - Ubunty a few weeks ago !
