Both have the same source as a basis: StarOffice (a German product, originally ! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> ) is the commercial variant, whereas OpenOffice is the Open variant. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />
The commercial variant ships with some things the open variant doesn't have, like a spell checker and a thesaurus, as far as I know.
