The confusion with the manticore is easy to understand. There are two creatures with very similar names: the Manticora which has the scorpion tail you describe and the manticore which has a tail ending in lots of spikes like a porcupine that it can shoot forth like arrows.

Except for the tail, they are otherwise identical, having a human face, a lion's body and big bat wings (Though the wings seem to be optional depending on the story). Mythology, huh? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Edit: after a bit of research, it looks like the AD&D game added the wings. Otherwise, my descriptions seem to be correct <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
