That McAfee free site advisor appears to be really good. Just gave it a quick test last night.
Also, rather oddly - having just said how much I liked zonealarm, I've gone and changed my firewall to Keiro personal firewall - I guess just to see if its better on resources and stuff.
Seems to be slightly better, and I also noticed that the odd intermittent cut outs I get sometimes when opening web pages was gone when using this other firewall. Could zonealarm have been cutting out my net all this time and it wasn't my crappy service provider after all??
Needs more investigating...

Zonealarm is said to send data home as well, although I don't know what. Rumors said it's only "minor data".

I found out that Keiro personal firewall does that too, plus it clashes with some of my games. I cant play Swat 4 with that firewall enabled because you can't select any thing on the menu of the game. So, changed AGAIN - now trying 'Safety.Net firewall' - so far so good. And EVEN LESS of a resource drain than the other 2.

Not a resource hog. nice little package. I stopped using Zonealarm a few years ago, because when combined with Mozilla it created severe memory leakage.

Hmm sorry Rince, only got to this topic after I read your pointed reference in another thread Mea, what was your experience with Comodo? Did it start off okay and then eat up resources, or was it ravenous right from the start? I've just started experimenting with firewalls (preferably free ones!) after using Sygate for several years. Wanted something a bit newer... but I've kept the old Sygate installation file, just in case. Hmm yeah, it seemed fine at first, but as my Boss has a habit of (Making me ) connect every gadget he has to the computer (these include 3 diff CellPhones a navman 2 Camera's a couple of Palms his Realistic MP3 player and his iPod) the whole proggy went like treacle So far, my Comodo installation has been fine, although I'm not entirely happy with it. But it's only been up for about a week. Don't see a lot good said about any of the firewalls these days, free or paid versions, and ZoneAlarm in particular (which I didn't much like when I tried it many years ago) has been getting quite a bit of flack. Hmm well I have the whole ZoneAlarm suite (don't use the AntiVir ... cause IMHO !avast is better) but after 2 years of free updates & free engines updates I have not had any problems I particularly like the "Game Mode" Feature that works great for sp games (which I play a lot)Have tried AVG was a hassle installing specially after Norton's and tried 1 other I can't remember but ZA was by far the easiest to use install and update so ... I am happy with it On the other hand, with the myriad computer configurations out there I suppose it's not surprising that even the best software is loved by some and hated by others. Too true for years I was totally addicted to Norton's with all the lovely little tools that was until Win XP PRO got started then I lost the interest and the time to ahem work on it If anyone has other firewall suggestions, btw, I'd be happy to hear them. I stick to ZA

I've only got 19 days left on my Spysweeper subscription, so I was wondering the differences between the full version that I have and the freeware version that is in the above link.
I find Spysweeper very useful, and that in conjunction with my Norton AV 2006(which also expires in 20 days, I have had nary a problem with spyware/viruses. Whenever I run my Adaware(awesome program!, I will get two tracking cookies and that is it, and those are of the lowest threat level possible on Adaware.

But, yeah, I, too, recall the fun days of System Works and all the neat tools! Since I last posted about this, I've removed Comodo, re-installed Sygate, removed Sygate, and put Comodo back on... Fickle? Who, me?! I wouldn't be surprized if ZoneAlarm was my next experiment, though, when another I-can't-sleep-so-maybe-I'll-update-something attack comes on.

Since I last posted about this, I've removed Comodo, re-installed Sygate, removed Sygate, and put Comodo back on. Why? Just a few moments of madness... My cursor happened to brush over the Comodo tray icon, and instead of the usual message ("... All systems are up and running.") it was displaying something about "initializing". And it went right on displaying that until I exited and re-started the program. Rather than be sensible and do some research (apparently this is a known GUI glitch; the firewall was working fine), I uninstalled Comodo and put back Sygate. And then remembered my tiny concern about Sygate, which was that it appears to load very very slowly when I reboot... so slowly that everything else is up and running, and my email notification software has done its thing, before the tray icon show up. (For all I know, this could be just another GUI glitch...) Anyway, I eventually went back to giving Comodo a try. Still may experiment with others. Or return to Sygate.
