Have you defeated the rest of the Black Ring members yet? If not, leave Josephine for now, and take the others out. That may be enough to get another level, or you could come across better equipment.
If you attack her quickly enough and interrupt her summoning spell (Stun helps with this, if you are playing a melee warrior), she keeps trying to summon, and doesn't move on to attacks. see also;
