Cute as a button...... the origin (yea mea - this is the 2nd time you hear this)

In the times past, Cameo's (that word i couldnt remember earlier) were commonly used as buttons, more often than as jewellery...

Cameo's normally had faces of important/special/beautiful people carved on them (or loved ones), or even very important events...

with cameo's like these, who can blame them for saying cute as a button???

Note: the word "cute" was also the most commonly used slang word of the early 1900's and refers to the word Acute... in this case "acutely beautiful" today we will say "extremely beautiful", but in those days the word extreme were mostly used with a bad connotation.

We here in Germany say "Gemme" for this, if I'm right, and the English word "gem" is a close relative, I think.

These "cameos" were made in ancient times by highly skilled people and are simply breathtaking, regarding how they managed to carve tiny pictures into these stones ...
