Even level 1 of the Repair spell (repairs up to 60%) should be good enough to keep your equipment in working order. The areas where you can not get to a smith/merchant that can repair for you tend to be relatively small, but it is handy being able to repair yourself without interrupting what you are doing for long.

The bow merchant in the Dark Forest elven village sometimes sells mithril armour; it can be quite strong and has low requirements, but I don't recall its weight. Also, I think there is just mithril plate armour, if you are sticking to light armour partly for role playing purposes.
