I'm a new player to the game and not all that experienced in RPG's as well. I've been kind of blundering along so please bear with my [nocando] questions. I just noticed I failed the quest to save the two sick guys in the starter area of the game. I did find the magic mirror and have one gem, however when I put them in the healing pool, the healing guy just kept telling me he had no more gems. Huh?

Anyway I headed south to get the escort for the healers and met with Gen Alex. She then gave me some quest to deliver a note to another guy. On the way there I found another fort of some sort and I was entertained to a cut scene where some evil wizard turned all the guards against me! I tried to run away, thief coward that I am, however kept running into a dead end and getting killed rather quickly. My armor is no good and I couldn't find anyone to fix it at the Generals place as well which makes matters worse. Do I need to head back to the castle to trade and get repairs?

I'm really enjoying the game but it seems tough to me. I have a whole bunch of those little round charm things?, but have no idea how to use them. I'm level 9 now and seem to keep running low on health potions and only use magic for the freeze spell that I spent some points on.

Any tips? Maybe start over as a warrior? I picked survivor because I love sneaking around, but could be too tough for me.

Appreciate any replies.

For the '2 soldiers' quest, you have to use a deep enough water puddle (the one east of George's house and south of Goemoe's), in which case the mirror will disappear after you drop it. You need to complete this quest before the healers move (ie before you complete the escort quest or any of the quests which give you an invitation to the castle).

Are you sure you were not tryng to be noble, and avoid killing innocent soldiers under the control of the evil wizards?
If you do not kill them first, the mind control spell is broken after you meet one of the wizards later in the game.

If you approach the area slowly, moving straight in as much as possible, you should be able to run back out again without fighting. Alternately, you can simply avoid the area; other than experience points for killing the soldiers, there is nothing of value there.

Otho the healer (now in the Blue Boar Inn) can repair equipment. There are shops and a blacksmith in Ars Magicana, north east of the castle. Also, you can invest a skill point into Repair, to fix your own equipment (level 1 will restore up to 60% of full durability).

When you agreed to work for the army, you get to loot the armoury there (until those quests are done). IIRC it is mostly weapons, but you can check for better armour.

You need a skill to be able to (permanently) add charms to any equipment with charm slots.
Enchanting weapons/armour/items

If you loot whenever possible, you shouldn't have too much trouble trading crappy stuff for potions. Meat and bread may still be helpful at your level for healing (and chicken for mana), though will eventually become more trouble (in terms of weight) than they are worth.

The healing spell comes in handy at the start of the game, especially if you don't need a lot of mana for other spells. You can get 3 free levels of Restoration, though you have missed one by not healing the 2 soldiers in Aleroth (if you only recently completed the escort quest, you could reload an older save, if you have one).

If you place one teleporter stone near a bed, you can teleport back and forth to rest.

Restoration potions can be much more effective than health or mana potions, once your health and mana are high enough.

A warrior is a little easier to play than a survivor.

There is a patch for the game, though some re-release versions may already be updated to the latest 1.0034A version, as shown in the bottom right corner of the main menu, so would not need to be patched. The DVD version is already updated, and the patch (designed for the CD version) should not be installed.

Hello olgeezer!

About the healing gems: you did good, but missed one little thing: you shouldn't have thrown the mirror into the healing well, but into a puddle of water, which you can find east of George and south of Goemoe:

[Linked Image]

There you can throw in the mirror, then the gem and a second gem will appear.

Don't feel bad, I also missed that the first time around.

Ok, you say you headed south. Does that mean you left the village without doing the catacombs, i.e. the Mardaneus quest? If so, I suggest you head back and do it first. It should give you a decent amount of XP required to venture out of Aleroth's walls.

To repair items you need to find a smith, though I'm not even sure about it: I always invest skill points in it.

The charms are used to buff up equipment with charm slots. You probably don't have any yet, but you'll get there later.

About the class you chose, obviously every class has its pros and cons, I myself usually play as a warrior, others swear by the mage. You should know though that the game is tougher at first and gradually becomes easier as you progress.

I'll leave you with some handy links:

You were pretty close, though. . Maybe next time I'll have gone to bed at a reasonable hour...

Thanks for the replies folks.

I guess I missed out on healing the 2 guys, but I can live with that. (although I guess they won't harhar!) I just got to level 10 and put another point into restoration so at least now I can heal without spending a fortune in potions. Although now instead of always looking for healing potions I'll be looking for mana.

I did do the catacombs and picked up what I think is a good amulet in one of those dungeons under the tiles on the bottom level. Couldn't beat the boss in there so just snuck in and "retrieved" my prize without the sap even knowing I was there. That bottom level was hilarius talking to the undead. They were very polite, and even gave me gifts! Was also pretty funny when they turned on me and I, (as usual) ran away with about 100 if them chasing me around. Thank God I got rescued.

Anyway, after seeing General Alex, (who was pretty hot!), I ran again all the way see another General, Mito or something, who now wants me to sabotage some train. So I am moving along, or running I should say. I do a lot of that. Now my problem is armor. It's completely useless. But whenever I try and get it repaired, the icon is greyed out. Where the heck can I find someone to repair my armor and weapons? I feel naked!

Appreciate the help.

First find any merchant. Your best bet would be George in Aleroth right now. When you trade and the buy menu opens, you can switch to repair in the upper left corner. All you need is the gold required!

That is potentially one of the best amulets. I used it the entire game, though I was tempted to switch to the holy amulet (from a later quest). The only way I could defeat the spider there was to use Burning Wall (activate the spell, run past the spider, and return to hiding on the opposite side of the stairs); I found that spellbook looting Mardaneus' house (bookcases have a small chance of containing spellbooks).

If you have a skill point to spare, you can learn a level yourself. Repair can also show up as a skill bonus on equipment (I found a ring, belt and shoes with Repair, which I kept in a chest at my home base for occasional use).

I don't recall if Mardaneus in Aleroth can repair stuff, but the other healers have moved to the Blue Boar inn (just north west of the army barracks with General Alex), and Otho the dwarf can.

There are shops and a blacksmith (who can repair) in Ars Magicana, north east of the castle. That may be a good place to move your other teleporter stone, for easy access.

Actually, after you cure Mardaneus, I don't think George is feeling up to repairing any equipment.

I didn't recall he was "unavailable" that early.
