Hello olgeezer!
About the healing gems: you did good, but missed one little thing: you shouldn't have thrown the mirror into the healing well, but into a puddle of water, which you can find east of George and south of Goemoe:

There you can throw in the mirror, then the gem and a second gem will appear.
Don't feel bad, I also missed that the first time around. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Ok, you say you headed south. Does that mean you left the village without doing the catacombs, i.e. the Mardaneus quest? If so, I suggest you head back and do it first. It should give you a decent amount of XP required to venture out of Aleroth's walls.
To repair items you need to find a smith, though I'm not even sure about it: I always invest skill points in it.
The charms are used to buff up equipment with charm slots. You probably don't have any yet, but you'll get there later.
About the class you chose, obviously every class has its pros and cons, I myself usually play as a warrior, others swear by the mage. You should know though that the game is tougher at first and gradually becomes easier as you progress.
I'll leave you with some handy links:
