For the '2 soldiers' quest, you have to use a deep enough water puddle (the one east of George's house and south of Goemoe's), in which case the mirror will disappear after you drop it. You need to complete this quest before the healers move (ie before you complete the escort quest or any of the quests which give you an invitation to the castle).

Are you sure you were not tryng to be noble, and avoid killing innocent soldiers under the control of the evil wizards? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
If you do not kill them first, the mind control spell is broken after you meet one of the wizards later in the game.
If you approach the area slowly, moving straight in as much as possible, you should be able to run back out again without fighting. Alternately, you can simply avoid the area; other than experience points for killing the soldiers, there is nothing of value there.
Otho the healer (now in the Blue Boar Inn) can repair equipment. There are shops and a blacksmith in Ars Magicana, north east of the castle. Also, you can invest a skill point into Repair, to fix your own equipment (level 1 will restore up to 60% of full durability).
When you agreed to work for the army, you get to loot the armoury there (until those quests are done). IIRC it is mostly weapons, but you can check for better armour.
You need a skill to be able to (permanently) add charms to any equipment with charm slots.
Enchanting weapons/armour/itemsIf you loot whenever possible, you shouldn't have too much trouble trading crappy stuff for potions. Meat and bread may still be helpful at your level for healing (and chicken for mana), though will eventually become more trouble (in terms of weight) than they are worth.
The healing spell comes in handy at the start of the game, especially if you don't need a lot of mana for other spells. You can get 3 free levels of Restoration, though you have missed one by not healing the 2 soldiers in Aleroth (if you only recently completed the escort quest, you could reload an older save, if you have one).
If you place one teleporter stone near a bed, you can teleport back and forth to rest.
Restoration potions can be much more effective than health or mana potions, once your health and mana are high enough.
Free skills, and spell books you can buyA warrior is a little easier to play than a survivor.

Early Starter Tips (NON-Spoiler Version) (contains much of the information in the above topic)
There is a
patch for the game, though some re-release versions may already be updated to the latest 1.0034A version, as shown in the bottom right corner of the main menu, so would not need to be patched. The DVD version is already updated, and the patch (designed for the CD version) should not be installed.
