Awhile after I finished DD I tried the demo for some then-popular action RPG (don't recall the name). Most of the chests were painted onto the background, and could not be opened. Exploring a house, I went upstairs and found a large pentagram with a candle at each point. My immediate reaction was to try to light all the candles, because that might make something happen, but they were just painted background. I lost all interest in the game at that point.
I can play action RPGs if there is something unique or different about them (such as 'I of the Dragon', where you play as a dragon), but for the most part don't even bother checking them out. I think the current dominance of action or simplified RPGs has created a demand for more elaborate and immersive games, which at least a couple RPGs in development are attempting to satisfy.
