The Plate Armor I have at the moment has the following stats:

Charm Quality 4
Armor 290
+40 Vitality
+10 Resistance to poison
+2 Hearing
12/12 Durability

This armor fetches me the price:

5984 Gold

I found this armor in the Dark Forest.

Exceptional Mithril Plate Mail
Armor 300
Durability 25/40

Fetches me the price:

36,502 Gold

This amazes me. I rechecked the armor on the first armor to make sure it was 290. And unless I am seeing wrong, it definitely looks like 290.

The price difference is 7x's.

There are relatively rare random attributes for items (such as the suffix 'of angels') which increase their value to merchants, but do not give any other bonus. This works best when you find such items and sell them (some people have wondered if they should buy such items; if they are that expensive they figure they might have some kind of hidden attributes or benefits).

An interesting find in the wastelands, worth 50,000 gold (I assume the 'silver' part is what bumps the price up);

Silver Long Dagger Of Mater Warriors
Durability 10
Damage 9-31
+4 Strength

Don't rush yourself :P In my, and most, peoples opinions it isn't as fun. Read: It's not half as fun. =/ Damn you CDV.

Mithril is supposedly really rare, so they might have made it cost more because of that.

The wastelands is the final area of the game (it is a one way trip there).

I don't think mithril is the cause of the high price. The bow merchant in the elven village sometimes has mithril plate armour for sale at reasonable prices. Due to low requirements with a relatively high armour class, this is sometimes favoured my people playing mage characters (as long as they are not sticking too close to the traditional mage build).

Another factor in cost is the durability. The armor that was worth about 5,000 had a durability of 14 if I remember correctly while the $30,000 armor had around 40 durability or about 3 times more durability. You can see this in items that your repair. Because Geoff never has enough gold for me to sell my stuff to I let him fully repair my items. After the repair some of my items are worth $5000 more dollars.

I found some gold ring that has absolutly no stats at all and its worth 25,000. So some of the prices are odd. I still have the ring only because the npc's in rivertown never have enough gold to buy my stuff. I always unload the havy items so I am not burdened and then the stuff they can't buy I either pile up outside the shop or give away.

It makes no sense to me why they have these useless itesm that are worth alot if the npc's have little gold to buy them off you. I also find lots of items with neagitive stats, like -6 to speed or -3 to sight. These worthless rings and amulets still sell for arounf $500. Kinda strange. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif" alt="" />

I repair my own loot. Even if the boost in value is more than what the merchant charges to repair, I'm too cheap to pay for something I can more easily do myself.

Whenever possible I used loot to trade for stuff, with the high value items good for spell books or charms.

Durability really adds up prices, My holy (Nobleman's) dagger had only 4 durability and in spite of having tons of level 5 stats (charm quality, mana drain, life drain, frost damage, poison damage, plus a bunch I can't remember), It was worth less than 4,000. Whereas when I got it with very little attributes (I loaded game afterwards, of course) but had tons of durability, it was worth about 50,000!

Some items are like that. For example: Gauntlets of elemental mastery (no attributes, worth 47,000), Dwarven helmet of Warrior Priests (no attributes, worth 36,000) and others (like your gold ring)

Negative attributes really cut down the price of items. Geoff is the NPC with the most gold, he can get over 50,000 every couple of game days, so when he'd run out of gold I'd run around and fight until he got his gold back.

The dwarven smith also tends to have a lot of gold. If you are in the dwarven halls anyway...

On an related topic, I never understood the prices in (A)D&D games.
Now that I'm playing NWN1, I have great difficulties to obtain the best things for my character. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

I picked up something like "Heavy Plate Gloves of Matter Mastery" that have no bonuses or charm slots, but are worth 45k. They're still sitting outside Geoff's shop.
