Are you shutting down all non-essential programs (especially anti-virus) before starting the game?
I'm not sure why crashes would be more frequent in town. A couple people had crash problems associated with going through doors, but usually lowering the hardware sound acceleration would help in that case.
I assume you checked for Windows updates, updated sound / video drivers, etc?
