How many of you who enjoy DD also were fans of Ultima VII ?

Don't you think that after this gem, the new direction for the sequels (3D graphics - action RPG) trades this flavor for marketing goals?

Personally, I'd prefer in depth dialogues with consequences and multiple ways to solve quests over 3D graphics any day.

Probably most.

The trend towards 3D graphics is a good thing, in general (greater world immersion, more variety in characters, NPCs and equipment, smaller file sizes per model, etc). The problem is developers / fans / publishers / etc who focus on graphics to the exclusion of other features.

I think the action RPG trend has slowed, or at least there is a counter movement with some real RPG games in development.

I can not speak to the Ultima VII sequels directly. I have VIII, but have not gotten around to playing it (the demo wasn't terribly compelling, that I recall). I never checked out the demo for IX, perhaps because it came between UO and the canceled Ultima X MMO.

You're preaching to the choir, here. I'd like as good a graphics quality as possible without negatively influencing the rest of the game.
Unfortunately, game reviewers tend to weight graphics fairly highly, and reviews and box art are an astonishingly large influence on in-store purchases.

I never heard of Ultima. What does it look like? Does it's plot even come close to matching that of Divine Divinity? What graphics does it have? What company produced and/or designed it?

There are a couple screenshots on Wikipedia's Ultima VII page, as well as links to pages for the other games in the series.
Briefly, Ultima VII was a DOS based, top down perspective RPG released in 92, developed by Origin Systems. Graphics were pretty good for the time (actually they are pretty impressive considering the game was first released on 5.25" floppies ). The game world was very interactive, and the story non-linear.

I played at least part IV on the original Nintendo. If I can find it at a reasonable price I would get the collection (I - VIII) for the earlier games (already have VII and VIII).
