Hello,

I've installed, uninstalled, and re-installed the game several times now and I keep getting the same problem.

Clicking the desktop shortcut (which I had to switch to compatability mode for, apparently - I'm trying to run it in Vista but I have no idea about my computers other technical information, I don't do well with stats) loads up a window called 'Divine Divinity Configuration V1.1' and after a 10 second screen test I click 'apply & close' I'm met with a very specific error code...

[Linked Image]

after which everything simply stops.

I've been trying to work out what's wrong through reading through these forums but I'm afraid all this compuspeak really goes over my head. I need an explanation in real dumb-dumb terms on how to get this thing running.

Any help is very appreciated; and sorry if I'm repeating other users here - I really did have a long sift through.

Also I don't know if this helps, but I've downloaded the recommended English patch and that doesn't seem to have made any difference.

Have you read the suggestions in this thread? Perhaps there's something in there you haven't tried yet.

Oh, and welcome to the forum! wave I hope you'll be able to sort this out quickly!

Thanks, but yeah I did try that thread. I'm running it in compatability mode because that was giving me a seperate problem where it wouldn't let me even access the testing window, but now that it will I'm getting the above error message. As for rights and privellages, this is my laptop so I can't understand how I wouldn't have permission to install a game on my own computer. Thanks though.

Did you check the '..\Divine Divinity\Run\static\imagelists' folder, and see if the 2 files listed in the error message exist?

CPackedb.0c should be 79,360,274 bytes (75.6MB), while CPackedi.0c is 403,648 bytes (349KB). You may have to right click on the file and select Properties or something to check the exact size (have not used Vista).

There is a file verification procedure in the Troubleshooting Tips (& manual install procedure) topic, though there may be an easier way to check the files in question.

Download this zip file (17KB) and extract the contents into your 'Divine Divinity' folder. It contains the program DVDsig and an md5 file created from a clean install of DD and the 1.34 patch (after starting DD and exiting). An md5 value is similar to the CRC-32 value (cyclic redundancy check) used in zip files to test the integrity of the compressed files (the CRC value is calculated when each file is compressed and again when extracted; if the values differ, then the files themselves are different, and the zip file corrupt).

In Windows Explorer, browse to the 'Divine Divinity' folder and run the DVDsig.exe program (it should work in Vista, AFAIK). In the program window, click on 'Verify' (top left, on the menu bar). The program will then scan your DD folder and report any differences compared to my md5 file. Of course configuration files and anything system dependent will most likely be reported as 'invalid', but in this case we are particularly interested in the files mentioned in the error message.
In a couple minutes when the program finishes, select the results in the text window and copy them into a reply here.

Some re-release versions of DD may already be updated to the latest 1.0034A version, as shown in the bottom right corner of the main menu, so would not need to be patched. Installing the patch over an already updated CD version will not hurt anything, though.
The DVD version is already updated, and the patch (designed for the CD version) should not be installed.

Wow, okay, thank you for helping. I've ran the programme and well, it doesn't sound promising...

So apparently it can't find those files at all. I've checked for the specific files based on the sizes you described and the first one (75.6mb) is there but the second one isn't.

Oops, I forgot to delete the files in the dynamics folder before creating the md5 file. Since you have not gotten the game started, it has not cached any data in the dynamic folder yet.
The previous 3 files are system or option dependent, and I would not expect them to match.

The data is invalid. Run\div.exe

If you installed the 1.34 patch, I would think our div.exe files would be the same...

The system cannot find the file specified. Run\static\imagelists\CPackedb.7c

These missing files are your main problem.

Do you have a different optical drive you can try installing the game from? If there is a problem with the disk, or the drive, another drive may be able to read it better.

Try putting install disk 1 into an optical drive, then browse to the 'disc1' folder and copy the imagelists.rar file to the hard drive. A couple people who ran into problems during install were able to manually extract the problem files.

Once the file is copied to your hard drive, you can extract it into the '..\Divine Divinity\Run' folder. If you do not have an archive manager (I assume Vista only has built-in support for zip files?), try either of the freeware programs 7-Zip or IZArc.

If a simple file copy fails, or you get errors trying to extract the contents from the hard drive, then the problem is probably with the disk itself.
In that case the solution could get a little more involved than running DVDsig (though not terribly so).

I'm not sure about these files, but at least a few of the rest are system dependent or are updated after the game is started.
