Maybe it`s impolite to ask this so soon, since the game is still under construction, and since i`m totally new here and already making a topic like this, but still, about what could be the system requirements of Divinity 2?

The screenshots that are currently on the net from Geforce 8800 dual-core systems running in full HD (1080p). the target is to have it run on 7800 cards. Because the game also runs on an Xbox360, it's more optimized than if it only had been a PC game. A 360 game has to be able to run from DVD using only 512Mb, so the benefits for the PC version are clear.

8800gt huh? Would a 4850 handle it okay?

It should. At least according to a quick look at the first couple Google results for '8800gt vs 4850', the two perform comparably, with the 4850 coming out ahead.

Well lets take a look at all this info...

The Xbox 360 processor is made of three PowerPC cores, each one running at a 3.2 Ghz clock speed
NOTE: Xbox (like all other consoles) basically work as super graphics cards, computers are designed to do more then play games, thus the recommendation will be higher then 512mb ram as Windows and other software require RAM to run.

I was looking up the 8800 GT card. They look like they run on pci express 2.0 which is suppose to be almost double the speed of pci express.

My main question would be will the game utilize multi-core processors? If no, then an intel 3.2ghz cure 2 duo would probably do.
If the 8900 or 8950 card is released and your going to build this by the time the game launches, I'd get that instead of the 8800.

Recommended sounds like...
8800gt video card (2x or 4x SLI?)
Core 2 Quad 3.2ghz
1gb-2gb ddr2
8-10gb free disk space (?)
Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 (DirectX 10.1)

Minimal I'd guess might be...
7800gt video card
core 2 duo 2.5-3.2ghz
8-10gb free disk space
1gb DDR2 (go 2gb DDR2/DDR3 for Vista)
Windows XP SP2 and DirectX 9 (you can still buy one, online stores should have them in stock still).

NOTE:
AMD/ATI products usually do better with gaming then Intel. Intel products are better at handeling business applications and some specifically coded software. If need be, MS Office does work on AMD Processors.

AMD/ATI are more hardware compatible. Though Nvidia works well with AMD processors.
Intel/Nvidia are more hardware comatible. Though ATI cards work well with Intel Processors.
Years ago ATI was much better then Nvidia. Nvidia caught up quite a bit and is very good.

So, an Xbox would have about 9.6ghz in total? While an e8400 would have about 6 ghz total?

Build a pc, huh? I am thinking of building a new one though it seems the Core2Duo range will probably be listed as EOL soon, as Core i7 is out. Though I've also heard some are thinking of skipping i7 since it doesn't allow for overclocking as it's more for servers.

Edit: 1 qn. How efficient do you think D2 will be, at taking advantage of multicores?

Oh and if you're aiming to tell me to go for rebates for online retailers, don't bother. :p I live in Asia.

I'd give the market a while before I'd build one. Intel released (guess a month ago) the engineering schematic for usb3.0 to other mainboard manufacturers. Also, computer hardware will drop in price over time.

I highly doubt core 2 will be EOL that soon. And even if it is, you can probebly buy a used cpu. As long as they are not being overclocked, they won't die until 20 years from now provided the MB doesn't get zapped by lightning.

As for total speed of a cpu. If all cores are going at 100% then yeh, 9.6ghz. But if a game can only use 1 core. It will only be running at 3.2ghz which is already running windows. If a game can use multiple cores then it can run like 9ghz provided the game hogs that much cpu. You'd need alot of monsters on the screen for it to require 9.6ghz of speed.

Most games only use one core. Even if the executable is set to handle multiple, it will only run the 1st core that is already running windows and all your other software.

EDIT:
I don't know how well it would handle multi-core. Xbox is pretty limited with 512mb ram and dvd to play the game so I doubt it will be laggy on a good core 2 duo at 3.2ghz since HDD's are faster then dvd drives and you'd have more ram. I'm doubting D2 will require much more out of a system then any game you can pick up at the store these days. It sounds to me that the 3 core 3.2ghiz cpu is more of a waste in an xbox and won't get anywhere near full usage as data goes threw RAM to be processed unless it uses the HDD paging file (temporary ram) which again is limited in speed compared to the speed of a stick of ram. There is alot more to computers than a cpu.

Correct me if I'm wrong here...

Yes... you're right about the core i7. Though, *sighs* when the hardware hits Singapore, it's going to cost at least a few thousand just for the motherboard and cpu. smirk Heck, q9550/q9650 + mobo can cost up to SGD1.3k - 1.5k right now and that chip was released in March 2008. As to how much the prices will drop? I don't know since I know little about price fluctuations.

As for usb 3.0, I do know it's likely going to be implemented come late 2009 to 2010. But before taking the plunge, I'd like for this technology to mature a little: it'll take time to weed out all the teething problems.

Interesting... you might be right about the EOL thingy, considering that some of the C2 chips were released just 2 to 3 months ago. Though Singapore tends to get lightning strikes many times per year so I doubt the motherboard would last too long. Yeah, a surge protector + UPS help against lightning + less than perfect wiring. Already, I've heard the UPS making clunking sounds a few times: likely evidence it's kicking into action. :p

So in the end, people are upgrading their cpus mainly because of the speed of each core, eh? smile

Edit: Huh... you are right about comps doing a lot of things and thus, needing more power. smile Right... looking at the system specs, it seems like yeah... a 4850 will be able to handle this game. smile

Wiring is wiring, as long as current can go threw it...boom. A lighting strike will blow up a UPS and a surge strip is a joke (when it comes to a good strike). Only way to fully protect your system from lighting is to physically pull the power plug, ethernet and dial up cable out of your system as lighting can fry your modem / network card as well. Just the static of a close strike can ruin a MB, lightning is very powerful. Powering off does help, BUT can still be fried just as if it was on.

You can usually get the fried parts replaced if in warrenty, just never say there were storms or lighting. As for a surge protector, that helps protect you from fluctuations from man-made generated electricity on the line.

Heh... strangely, nothing in my house has fried from lightning over the 20 years that I've stayed here. Parts dying from bad wiring is more likely. <---- that's what the Surge protector is for.

Yep... the UPS is more like a battery in case something bad happens.

With that said, I really hope Larian can push out the specs soon.

I really like the recommended requirements. It's exactly my system. smile

Does the game will have support for anti-aliasing? I know this sounds like a little silly question, but I think that's really important. I prefer to turn down most of the graphics options just do play with AA on. Most of 2008 games doesn't support it. PC Gamers play right in front of the screen, and most of the developers doesn't remember it hahaha

Did you check and see if your video card driver can change AA settings? There should be something related to video card settings in control panel (not display, that is the same as right clicking desktop).

Also, do you have any aliasing issues in those games if you leave their standard or more advanced features on?

Everyone has their opinion. Until the recently released HD 4870 x2, nVidia has owned ATI for at least the last 3 years, and is only a matter of time until they leapfrog to the top again. Not to mention ATI driver support sucks now and always has...this from a guy that started with and preferred ATI for quite some time.

And overall, top to bottom, ATI DOES NOT usually do better with gaming. This has not been the case in quite some time.

You are semi-correct in your AMD/ATI and Intel/nVidia pairings. However, the more precise reasoning for the pairings is that AMD/ATI are and have been considered second tier in the mainstream for years. Therefore, Intel/nVidia pairings dominate the marketplace. AMD/ATI have tried to drum up a decent market share by pairing up in more affordable systems. Is no different than PC/MAC, Windows/OSX, etc. There is real and perceived performance differences and preferences.

Please don't just throw out information as gospel...for whatever reason it may be. frown

On a separate note: HEY Dev's...any chance we can get some more eye candy from the game soon????? Would be greatly appreciated!!!! biggrin thankyou biggrin

Newer NVidia drivers are too often crap for older games. At least for my GeForce 8600 GT.

Intentional ?

The newest drivers, however, are better now.

It isn't intentional that they make the drivers worse for older games. That's a side effect of how they optimize drivers for the newer games. If review sites would run old games with a slate of drivers to get benchmarks, you'd see how performance really jumps around. At some point, it's better for people to stop updating their video drivers unless there's a specific fix in it or a game they are playing is mentioned as being optimized.
