Actually, I found the exploit requires less than I thought:
You only need to cast embrace shadows while taking damage for this to work, you don't need to be attacking someone yourself. But of course, you must be out of light as well.
Actually, I'm surprised if this hasn't been discovered before, because it seems like a thing easy to stumble upon.
